COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Created by Joe Formanek.
For the past 15 years, Joe has been brewing his Russian Imperial Stout. This malt-forward brew has a rich complexity, with roasty and chocolate notes, yet enough hop bitterness to balance out the sweetness. This satisfying winter brew is full-bodied with an enjoyable velvety smoothness.

Bottle: too bad russian are more known by their vodka than their Stouts! Food Pairing: add vanila ice cream.

Midnight black with a large dark brown cap. Aroma of dark roasted malts, coffee, molasses and light hops. Taste is sweet with coffee, chocolate, dark roasted malts and a bit of alcohol.

Found this in the back of the fridge, nice roasted aroma, smooth and roasty flavor, nice stout

Very thick black pour with a small brown head. The aroma is super dark roast, chocolate, some oxidation, and some mellow alcohol. The flavor is similar, with a lingering bitterness. Pretty tasty stuff.

Nice beer, but it doesn’t stand out at all in the Imperial Stout category. Very one note. But it’s still a nice beer to enjoy, just not mind-blowing

Volgon (2763) - Manchester, New Hampshire, USA - JUL 27, 2013
Bottle: Pours black with a thin tan head, big coffee and chocolate aroma, starts and ends lightly sweet with a bitter fruit ending, mellow carbonation, full bodied.

Appearance: Pours a delightfully thick oily black with a thick espresso crema head which fades slowly and sticky, leaving lace as it recedes. What remains is mousy and velveteen, like a fine dessert brewed just for me.
Nose: Massive and impressive. Black root, black licorice, tar and char. Espresso and toffee melted together. Bitter dense dark chocolate fudge. Espresso crema. Burnt wood and burnt caramel. Oily pipe tobacco leaf. Vanilla cream.
Palate: I am one happy Beer Ambassador from the first quaff to the last as my tastebuds sing under the delicious onslaught of creamy toasted marshmallows and melted milk chocolates with a bitter dark chocolate finish. And that’s not all! Decadent dark chocolate fondue. Burnt edges. Caramel nougat and caramel truffles in the middle. Cigar and pipe tobacco leaf in my breath – oily and rustic. As the beer warms up, the flavors open up even more and eventually melt into a seamless river of quaffing pleasure. More tar, more char, more burnt chocolate coffee beans tobacco caramel nougat vanilla cream indulgence.
Final Thoughts: Why this Longshot entry did not win simply blows my mind. Of all the various Samuel Adams Longshot entrants I have tasted over the years, the Five Crown Imperial Stout was by far the best. In fact, I dare say it beats out Samuel Adams own imperial stout. Maybe that’s why it wasn’t chosen. Hm… If you are reading this Jim Koch, please bring this beer back in its pure unadulterated delicious form. Pretty please with vanilla ice cream on top.

Bottles from the long shot series. Dark brown / black colored pour with a tan head. Big chocolate, coffee, and malt aroma. Sweet and thick with a good amount of chocolate. Pretty bold beer, and a good beer from Sam Adams - I would love to see this brewed all the time.

Imaena (1701) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - JUN 8, 2013
Bottle: The nose is deeply roasted malts and sweet molases. It pours a dark black with a negligible head. The taste is roasted malts and a faint whiff of hops. The palette is thick and oily. Overall a decent Impy and great for the price when you can grab it as a single.

Bottle shared by Dogbrick on Memorial Day. Black pour with a thick tan head. Chocolate malt aroma with notes of licorice and roast. Malty and chocolatey flavor with caramel and licorice before a roasty finish.

Sample at the Memorial Day Deck Beers tasting on 05/27/2013: Deep brownish-black pour with a medium tan head that recedes gradually. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate and hops. Medium to full body with flavors of chocolate malt, coffee and subtle hops. The finish is roasty with a coffee aftertaste. Above average overall.
