3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 dmac (3166) - Toms River, New Jersey, USA - MAY 18, 2013
12oz bottle from Spirits Brick. Poured a good looking dark orange amber body with an average sized frothy light beige head. Aroma is soapy citrus rind, earthiness, touch of caramel, old cat litter, green veggies, dry old sugar. Medium bodied with average to softer carbonation, lingering flavors on the back of my tongue and a coating mouthfeel overall. Flavor of dry sugar, dry hop cones, citrus rinds, old grapefruit meat, flowers, earthiness. Solid beer that gets better as I sip it.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 fidelis83 (1585) - Clinton, Iowa, USA - MAY 17, 2013
Clear old copper pour with a 2 finger creamy, soapy beige head. Aroma of bitter citrus, pine, lots of deep caramel, lemony citrus oils and light woody notes. Flavor is oddly loaded with dark sugary notes up front, brown sugar, caramel, burnt sugar molasses, and some woody, sappy sweetness, some pine, earthy and citrus hops come in, but this is a pretty malt forward IIPA, though the woody notes could be at least partially hop based, it honestly reminds me of a lighter version of Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree, maybe with some time on it might be like Crooked Tree (they claim it is simply the recipe with doubled everything but water), but I don’t remember that well enough. Medium body, a little syrupy, with a medium strength, sharp and blanketing carbonation, fairly astringent finish. Pretty tasty overall, probably closer to what I expect from a young, lighter Barleywine than IIPA, though.

12oz bottle 5/16/13 Longshot Six Pack (Binny’s Naperville)-40° in Shaker-Pours a medium bronze with a small loose off white head. Aroma of hops and malt. Taste of malt and hops. This medium bodied brew is well balanced and goes down smooth.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Pailhead (3859) - Plymouth, Michigan, USA - MAY 16, 2013
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy pine, citrus, light-moderate caramel, and light toffee. It pours a transparent copper with a two finger off-white head with great retention. A lot of sticky webbing is left behind on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate caramel, toffee, and light fruit. The finish has moderate citrus hops, lighter pine, and a touch of spice. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation and a somewhat sticky mouthfeel. Overall, the malt up front is more pronounced than I prefer in my IIPA’s. It’s a IIPA that blurs the lines between IIPA and Barley Wine.
3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 justsayswell (21) - Missouri, USA - MAY 15, 2013
Pours a dark amber with no sediment. Big billowy head that leaves tons of lacing and disappears slowly. Aroma is fruit and light citrus, a little pine and grain. Great nose. Taste is resinous hops front and center, pretty sweet, a little sticky. Caramel malt, toffee, raisin, some floral notes. Carbonation is soft, almost cask-like. Pretty interesting. Not as one-note hoppy as some double IPAs. Definitely a unique take on the style and I think very well done.
