Zack Adams’s Magnificent Seven IPA is described as “a showcase of seven American hop varieties that impart a big piney and lingering resinous flavor. A true Imperial American IPA, this brew pours a rich bronze color. The slightly sweet malt character is pleasantly balanced by a pronounced hop bitterness with grapefruit, pine and earthy notes from the American hops. This medium-bodied IPA also delivers caramel, citrus, lemon and piney aromas.

Bottle. Enjoy before: 09/13. A clear rusty pour with a thick antique white head that leaves rings of lacing behind. The aroma features lots of pine, grapefruits, zesty citrus rinds, caramel, rye, and a little orange/lemon juice. Goes down medium to full-bodied and fairly smooth. The taste starts with quite a bit of toffee, caramel, and a rich freshly-baked bready maltiness. Chewy. A touch of creamy vanilla in the middle. Grapefruits and zesty citrus rinds are present at the end. The finish is very dry and lingers for quite a while. Resiny. A fair amount of warming alcohol is present throughout.

Bottle from Sprout’s: Poured a medium orangish colored amber hue topped with a growing thick foam head. Aroma is balanced well between a variety of hops and some big caramel like malts but does have somewhat of a pungent whiff. The drink is also balanced in the ingredients as well with a chewy backing of sweet malt and bitter hop pellets that actually remind me of a hopped up barelywine. I can’t remember but this might be the first Imperial IPA I have tasted from Sam Adams. Clearly the winner from this year’s Longshot series

Ruby-amber in color with a massive, lacy off-white head. Sweet roasty (almost like hot dogs) aroma with floral hop edges. Malt forward, almost chewy with floral hop spikes and some lingering piney-ness in the finish.

12oz. bottle. Aroma of floral, fruity, citric hop and lightly sweet caramel malts, with notes of grapefruit, pine, lemon and some light malt toast in the background. Clear medium copper in color with a lasting, creamy, off-white head and very nice lacing. Flavor profile is full of fresh, fruity, leafy hop flavor throughout, but with a rather malty, sweet, honeyish, toasty caramel backbone, and finishing with a moderate amount of hop bitterness, pine and biscuit undertones. Smooth, low in effervescence and lightly resinous on the palate, body is medium-full. Very easy to drink, sort of a mellow take on the style.

12oz bottle poured into my ipa glass. Pours a dark copper color with a medium tan head that leaves great lacing. Smells of pine, grapefruit, lemon, resin, and caramel. Tastes of all the same things in the smell. Mouthfeel is medium and oily with decent carbonation and a dry finish. This is the best from this series of longshot beers. Nice and hoppy for a east coast style ipa. My only complaint is that it not as balanced as it could be and is a little rough on the palate.
