3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
sweet apple and plum malt throughout. chewy and syrupy, under-attenuated, but without any faults. red apple skin and caramel and vienna malt in the nose. hops seem dormant other than a moderate bitterness in the finish, along with an apparent dryness. or perhaps the syrupy perfume fruit flavor that Iím getting is how the hops present themselves. some dirty phenols seems to be in the mix too, giving it a mild flavor mid-palate of licorice, dried pineapple and salted/peppered cashews.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle: Pours a transparent deep copper amber with a stringy-lacing froth of off-white head. Aroma of sweet toasty caramel and pale malts with some resiny piny hops and a touch of light fruity esters. Starts with good fullness and rich light caramel sweetness with a resiny piny hop bitterness and flavor before a slightly drier, mildly warming bittersweet finish. A pretty true to style and enjoyable barleywine.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods, Glen Allen, VA on 5/5/10. Pours a clear reddish auburn color with a medium head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of fairly pronouced minty, citrus and floral hop notes with some toffee. The taste is toffee, brown sugar, citrus and resiny hops with a bit of a metallic twinge. Medium bodied with faint heat. I donít like the hop profile here, otherwise it would be a very good barleywine.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
A Mes rate. Bottle thanks to Our Tom.
Amber brown with a good off white head. Rather sickly malt on the nose. Lots of cheese and some faint bitterness too. Big rich malt dominated flavour. Pretty raw and unbalanced. Neat alcohol hints, slight unbrewed feel about it and just generally over the top without any finesse what so ever. Sugary sweet finish rounds things off as they started.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottled at cellar temp. Poured clear orangey-brown with a short, but well-retained beige head. The aroma picked up grassy and earthy hoppage over a grainy base of caramel and dark fruit.. touches of molasses and toffee down there too.. a lot more of the fruits as it breathed, especially date and plum notes.. a whole bunch of bright apple brandy other warming boozy sugars on the back of the nose. The flavor opened with sour malty notes and bright, greener bitterness.. molasses, plums, and caramel on the sweet, seemingly under-attenuated core.. warm finish with fruit and molasses-inspired grainy sugars, non-descript bitterness, and warming alcohol. Medium-plus bodied and syrupy on the palate with low carbonation.. very warm, and very grainy.. definitely some tasty components, but the balance wasnít quite there.. maybe this just needs a little time to mellow out.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours a clear caramel amber with a large beige head, creamy in places, but big fat soda bubbles elsewhere. Paper right away, oxidized and old, cardboard and plums. Sweet and full of caramel and plum, warm booze notes come through immediately. Big and warm on the finish with some nice bitterness and chocolate crackers. Decent, and held up a bit better than the old ale, but itís still a shame to think that this guys homebrew is probably doing better at this point than the version they made for him at Sam Adams. No reason a 6 month old barleywine should be full of paper and cardboard already.
