COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The first of this year’s winners, Dave Anderson, works in the packaging department at Sam Adams. His submission, a Strawberry Lager, is described as “a bright and fresh wheat beer, with a strong strawberry character balanced with toffee and citrus notes – the brewer’s vision of the perfect summertime beer to enjoy after a round of golf on a hot day. Brewed with fresh strawberries, this beer pours a bright golden color and imparts a malty sweetness with hints of lemon and earthiness. Strawberry Lager finishes with a wonderful intensive strawberry flavor without being overwhelming and leaves a lingering creamy sweetness on the palate.”

ben4321 (3784) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - APR 24, 2013
Location: 12 oz bottle from Rodman’s, 4/20/13

Aroma: The nose is extremely sweet, giving off lots of artificial strawberry and candied sugar
Appearance: This one pours a gold color, with a white head thats leaves some drippy lace
Flavor: The taste, just like the nose, is over-the-top sweet and full of strawberry candy flavors
Palate: The body is light-medium, and it would probably have a decent feel if it wasn’t so cloying
Overall Impression: I wasn’t a fan of this one at all. It is too sweet and too cloying to even be palatable, and after drinking less than half I had just about enough and passed it off to the wife. She, on the other hand, really like it.

Bottle... Poured pale golden with a nice white head. Nice lacing. Aroma had artificial candied strawberry notes. Biscuit and cracker-like malt notes mixed with an intense strawberry fruitiness. Soda pop-like. Meh.

FROTHINGSLOSH (4829) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 22, 2013
Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a hazy golden color with a medium sized creamy white head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was sweetish, tangy and had light notes of artificial sugar and artificial strawberry. The flavor was tart and tangy with moderate artificial sugar and artificial strawberry. Medium length artificial sugar and strawberry finish. Medium body. Blah.

ChainGangGuy (4351) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - APR 22, 2013
Part of the 2013 Samuel Adams LongShot Pack - Bullock’s Wine & Spirits in Marietta, Georgia.

Appearance: Golden body that would’ve been clean save for the chunky cloud of floaters.

Smell: Strawberries, to no one’s surprise, smelling rather sweetish with a definite candy quality about it. Minor influences of the malt.

Taste: Sweet, candyish strawberry flavoring through and through with just the quickest, littlest hints underneath of malt and, maybe, yeast to remind you there’s a beer present.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied (barely). Medium carbonation.

Overall: Maybe shame on me for saying this, but, this is one of those ’for the ladies’ brews. Actually, let me revise that: it’s ’one for the ladies and Dave Andersons’.

jcos (1520) - Maryland, USA - APR 22, 2013
UPDATED: MAY 9, 2013 Location/Date:Bottle on April 20th, 2013.

Appearance: Pours a gold clear.
Aroma: Aroma mostly of strawberry, nearly like a starkist candy.
Taste: Sweet, mostly strawberry, faint lemon.
Palate:Light body.

Summary: Not a poorly made beer, but this is just too sweet to me.

Bottle. Golden pour with a tall, pillowy white head. Strong berry notes to the nose. Almost candy-like and artificial in the sweetness level, however. The berries are dominant in the aroma department with maybe a hint of cereal or grains. Taste is sweet berries, light malt notes, cereal, hints of toasted grains and thinned candy. Body is medium with a vibrant, bubbly carbonation. Ends with more berries, soft grains, sweet malt notes and hints of candy.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a bright golden color with a small white head. Hey look, it’s the annual shitty fruit beer that wins the Sam Adam’s long shot contest. Aroma of strawberry bubblegum. Flavor of strawberry bubble tape. I’ve got nothing. Want to finish the other one in my fridge for me?

12 ounce bottle. Pours a clear golden color with a large white head. A really great nose: fresh strawberries, really natural. The flavor isn’t quite as good, some berries, sweet sugars, dry earthy wheat. Decent. A bit rough.

DocLock (7721) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 18, 2013
Bottles from Frank Smith’s and Capone’s. Pours chill hazy dark straw with clingy off-white head. Nose is strawberry-Quik, hopcitrus, earthy lemongrass. Tastes tart, with notes of strawberry, almost a strawberry lambic-like tartness level, with some hopcitrus, semi-sweet malty honey sweetness at mid-palate, and a tart finish.

Pours a clear pale golden, with a few floaties in there as well. Big robust white head. Strawberry and bubble gum aroma. Taste is a non-descript but balanced and refreshing lager, but with the sweet, somewhat peculiar, addition of fruitiness. Has a slightly harsh finish after the swallow, like I just chewed an aspirin. I tried to be open-minded in my judgement here, not being a fruit beer fan, but this is rather meh. Not bad, but something I don’t want to imbibe again.
