COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The first of this year’s winners, Dave Anderson, works in the packaging department at Sam Adams. His submission, a Strawberry Lager, is described as “a bright and fresh wheat beer, with a strong strawberry character balanced with toffee and citrus notes – the brewer’s vision of the perfect summertime beer to enjoy after a round of golf on a hot day. Brewed with fresh strawberries, this beer pours a bright golden color and imparts a malty sweetness with hints of lemon and earthiness. Strawberry Lager finishes with a wonderful intensive strawberry flavor without being overwhelming and leaves a lingering creamy sweetness on the palate.”

12 ounce bottle. Pours a clear golden color with a large white head. A really great nose: fresh strawberries, really natural. The flavor isn’t quite as good, some berries, sweet sugars, dry earthy wheat. Decent. A bit rough.

DocLock (8397) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 18, 2013
Bottles from Frank Smith’s and Capone’s. Pours chill hazy dark straw with clingy off-white head. Nose is strawberry-Quik, hopcitrus, earthy lemongrass. Tastes tart, with notes of strawberry, almost a strawberry lambic-like tartness level, with some hopcitrus, semi-sweet malty honey sweetness at mid-palate, and a tart finish.

wxman (1535) - O’Fallon, Illinois, USA - APR 16, 2013
Pours a clear pale golden, with a few floaties in there as well. Big robust white head. Strawberry and bubble gum aroma. Taste is a non-descript but balanced and refreshing lager, but with the sweet, somewhat peculiar, addition of fruitiness. Has a slightly harsh finish after the swallow, like I just chewed an aspirin. I tried to be open-minded in my judgement here, not being a fruit beer fan, but this is rather meh. Not bad, but something I don’t want to imbibe again.

Bottle from Four Firkins. Slightly hazy pale gold pour with a smaller white head. Mild sweet strawberry and a little lager yeast. Just so-so.

Bricktop86 (607) - Moore, Oklahoma, USA - APR 13, 2013
Pours yellow with a white head and floaties. Aroma is fruit roll ups and grains. Taste follows nose sweet fruit roll ups in a pale lager.

blipp (6722) - Newark, New Jersey, USA - APR 12, 2013
Bottle. Pours gold with a white head. Sweetish strawberry, with a light wheaty base, and just a hint of citrus. A tad on the artificial side, but decent nonetheless.

thornecb (4740) - Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA - APR 10, 2013
Pours gold into a Sam glass. Bright white micro head with excellent retention recedes leaving thin sheets. Strawberry jam aromas. Medium bodied with sweet strawberries upfront turning to mild crushed seeds in the medium length finish.

Drake (9999) - Free Union, Virginia, USA - APR 9, 2013
6300th rating! 12 ounce bottle. Pours a hazy amber color with a large white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of big strawberry notes, some earthiness, citrus and pale malts. The taste is candied strawberries and faint pale malts. Thin-medium bodied. Meh.

Bottle. Strawberry malt aroma. Medium with large head. Lightly sweet lemon and strawberry malt and hay flavor. Really not too bad - should replace Cherry Wheat with this.

   AROMA 8/10   APPEARANCE 5/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 15/20
EtTuCthulhu (1328) - Columbia, Missouri, USA - APR 8, 2013
The appearance of this beer is clear amber with an abundance of fine sediment, which makes the beer hazy overall, and with a small white head that dissipates quickly. The aroma hits you boldly on nose without overpowering you and smells somewhere between strawberry soda and stewed strawberries, and the taste is mildly sweet and slightly sour, much like a raw strawberry, which is quite pleasing; however, the palate isn’t exciting or fitting because the medium body feels out of place with the lively carbonation, sticky texture, and abrupt finish that call for a much lighter beer, especially because this is a lager.
