The first of this yearís winners, Dave Anderson, works in the packaging department at Sam Adams. His submission, a Strawberry Lager, is described as ďa bright and fresh wheat beer, with a strong strawberry character balanced with toffee and citrus notes Ė the brewerís vision of the perfect summertime beer to enjoy after a round of golf on a hot day. Brewed with fresh strawberries, this beer pours a bright golden color and imparts a malty sweetness with hints of lemon and earthiness. Strawberry Lager finishes with a wonderful intensive strawberry flavor without being overwhelming and leaves a lingering creamy sweetness on the palate.Ē

12 oz bottle shared by DrSilverworm. Pours a clear golden color with a medium sized white head. The aroma is sweet strawberry, some citrus, pale malts with a hint of honey. The flavor was sweet strawberry, mild citrus, grass, pale malts. Not great, but 94+ on the golf course made it drinkable.

12 oz bottle poured into my Samuel Adams perfect pint glass. Pours a clear golden color with a medium white head tha leaves pretty good lacing. Smells of Strawberry, butter, toffee and sweet malt. Tastes of the all the same things with a slight sourness almost like lemon. Mouthfeel is watery but silky with decent carbonation. This is a really good lagered fruit beer. Nice to have strawberry flavor that actually works. It was nice and light which is good for the summer. Glad I was able to try it.

Clear golden pour with a white head. Strawberry candy and sugar on the nose. Some bubblegum, cotton candy, and a touch of lemon. The flavor is sweet and sugary. Some strawberry flavor, cotton candy, and a bit of lemon zest and tartness.

355mL thanks to womencantsail. Pours a clear, sparkling golden with medium white foam. Spotty lacing. Nose is pretty intense strawberry popsicle. Taste is a bit sharp and prickly..decent sweet popsicle but the flavor is lost to regular honey and lemon. Palate is soapy, lemon, sugar. Not bad, but the bright strawberry is gone.

7/13/2013: Samuel Adams LongShot 2013 Strawberry Lager (lager brewed with strawberries and with natural flavor added) created by Dave Anderson... Wow, I just popped the top and plenty of stawberry aroma flooded out of the bottle! After pouring, this beer smells a lot like strawberry shortcake with strawberry candy (like those candies that come in holiday gift baskets), cream, and a bit of biscuity malt. The color of this beer is a plae golden yellow and it is hazy with a good amount of roiling carbonation and a fluffy off-white head of creamy foam that actually extended up out of the glass. The berry comes through in the flavor, but it is a bit more subdued and pairs well with the sponge cake and toffee maltiness. Although the strawberry does not overwhelm the underlying beer, I find it to be a somewhat strange combination. Maybe itís because the lager is somewhat yeasty and bready making it seem less crisp and clean overall which muddles the light, citrusy hops that try to come through in the finish. Iím not sure, but at least is tastes like real strawberry and doesnít seem forces or artificial. The medium-light, yet smooth and creamy mouthfeel is nice. Overall, this is a pretty good beer and probably one of the bette strawberry brews that I have come across. Although I like this beer somewhat, I donít feel complelled to have another and probably wouldnít want any more than a bottle or two. I just think itís a bit too sweet and too much berry for me in a beer. On the plus side, my wife (who doesnít like beer) thought that it smelled delicious and found it to be a beer she could drink. For me, strawberry and beer just isnít that great together and this isnít one that Iíd reach for on a hot day like today. In the end, I liked this beer less and less as I drank through the 1 bottle.

12 fl. oz. bottle (5.5% ALC./VOL.; Enjoy before AUG 2013) from The Party Source in Bellevue, KY. Rating #103 for this beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours a honey color with a thin white head. Aroma is loaded with strawberries. Like fresh strawberry preserves. Very light and refreshing. Great carbonation. Sweet malts, cereal, subtle citrus, and nice strawberry essence. Very fresh doesnít have that artificial flavoring. Has a nice crisp bite in the finish.
