COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The first of this yearís winners, Dave Anderson, works in the packaging department at Sam Adams. His submission, a Strawberry Lager, is described as ďa bright and fresh wheat beer, with a strong strawberry character balanced with toffee and citrus notes Ė the brewerís vision of the perfect summertime beer to enjoy after a round of golf on a hot day. Brewed with fresh strawberries, this beer pours a bright golden color and imparts a malty sweetness with hints of lemon and earthiness. Strawberry Lager finishes with a wonderful intensive strawberry flavor without being overwhelming and leaves a lingering creamy sweetness on the palate.Ē

Pours clear straw yellow with white fizzy head. Aroma of strawberry and light pale malt. Flavor is light and pleasant with the strawberry being forward but not overwhelming with a nice balance of malt and a nice dryness. Light body with crisp carbonation. Overall I can see the being a great, fun and refreshing summer brew.

Poured a slightly hazy yellow color with a thin white head. Lots of strawberries in the aroma, so much that it overpowers everything else. Taste also has lots of strawberries. Very sweet at first with slight malt flavors, but overpowered by sweet berries. Taste takes a turn towards the finish. It becomes slightly dry with hay and skunk. Aftertaste is of strawberries, not surprisingly.

The aroma is total strawberry, not artificial, sort of sweet, sour and earthy at the same time. The appearance is hazy tyellow, white head. The flavor is strawberry, cereal grains. The finish is strawberry sweet, noble hops, spicy. the Longshot beers are normally killer, better than most of what Sam brews. But this is the weakest Longshot beer I have ever tried. OK overall for what it is.

Bottled. Slightly hazy golden yellow with a minuscule white head. Pungent strawberry jam aroma - sweet/tart strawberry fruit has just enough "green" in it to tell that it isnít artificial. Flavor starts out mildly sweet and turns moderately sour. Itís refreshing to find a strawberry beer that isnít full of artificial strawberry flavor, but I almost get the impression that Iím eating those whitish pink under-ripe berries prevalent in the grocery store in the middle of winter. Interesting, refreshing enough, but as I finish my third of three new Longshots for the year I have to admit that Iím less than impressed with what Sam Adams has been selecting as their winning beers.

12 oz bottle: Aroma has a really nice fresh strawberry note. It just smells like freshly picked strawberries which is a good thing. Appearance is a clear golden color with a minimal white head. Taste has got the strawberry but has some bready and crisp notes of an actual lager. Palate is clean with a very light strawberry backing. Overall, Good stuff. Cheers!

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a straw color ridden with chunky yeast particles. The head is a two finger white shade. Itís nicely creamy and retains acceptably. TONS of lacing on the glass, too. But still...the bodyís a mess. S: The strawberry notes come through strongly at first. When allowed to open up, slight (balanced) diacetyl and noble hopping comes through, as well. The first few whiffs, though, were ridiculously sweet - almost like it was a strawberry soda instead of a beer. T: Itís got a little more balance than I expected. The first part is where the fruit qualities reside; after that, it morphs into a pre-pro pilsner, displaying notes of noble hops, biscuity malt/yeast, and mild adjunct. Some strawberry sweetness returns in the finish, a bit excessively at times. Nonetheless a successful warm weather refresher, nor does it strike me as being disgustingly artificial. M: Not as dry as I like my lagers, but itís a fruit beer. It could be a bit less cloying on the back end at least. Still, I like its drinkability. Completely under-carbonated, though. O: On occasion, Iím a sucker for a good lager. And also on occasion, Iím a sucker for a good fruit beer. This fulfills both quotas reasonably well. At the end of the day, itís rock-solid mindless refreshment, no more, no less.

2013 Longshot.
12oz bottle. Pours clear yellow color, floaties left behind in the bottle. Aroma of strawberry cereal. Wheat and dried berries. Taste is full of strawberry cereal. Good strawberry character, not too syrupy in any way, not lumpy puree either. Flavor of clean berries, nice cereal malt. Lingering strawberry notes on the palate. Better than I expected. And itís a fruited Lager?? Perhaps the BEST strawberry beer Iíve tasted! (3707)

12 oz bottle. Poured into a pint glass. Pours light gold with a hint of pink. One finger foamy white head. Smattering of lace. Strawberry and wheat aroma and taste. Thin palate with an odd strawberry aftertaste. Meh.

12oz. bottle. Fruity, citric and lightly malty aroma, with notes of strawberry (really?!), wheat and cereal grain, orange and caramel. Hazy light-medium golden amber color, with some suspended particles and a fine, uneven, subsiding head of white. Flavor profile is full of strawberry, again as advertised, with a fair amount of sweetness up front and hints of caramel and honey, but turning maltier and drying out a bit, with a very light bitterness and a kiss of lemon citrus on the finish. As this is a lager, finishes fairly clean and crisp, plenty of fine, active effervescence which helps quite a lot, and with a light-medium body. This sounded much worse than it turned out to be. I guess a homebrewer would know what makes a fruit beer tasty and refreshing.

Flute. Nice smell of strawberryís and cream. Almost reminds me of some ice cream. A nice tasting and refreshing beer. The strawberryís arenít overwhelming and it finishes with a pleasant creamy taste. Not the prettiest beer, somewhat clear gold. Has flecks of Iím guessing strawberryís.
