The first of this year’s winners, Dave Anderson, works in the packaging department at Sam Adams. His submission, a Strawberry Lager, is described as “a bright and fresh wheat beer, with a strong strawberry character balanced with toffee and citrus notes – the brewer’s vision of the perfect summertime beer to enjoy after a round of golf on a hot day. Brewed with fresh strawberries, this beer pours a bright golden color and imparts a malty sweetness with hints of lemon and earthiness. Strawberry Lager finishes with a wonderful intensive strawberry flavor without being overwhelming and leaves a lingering creamy sweetness on the palate.”

12oz bottle via single section at Spirits Brick. Poured a clear gold with a good amount of floating particles visible, average sized frothy white head. Aroma is all over the place, first whiff was big time strawberries followed by grains back to strawberries. Several minutes later I didn’t like it as much, as more time elapsed it turned from strawberry shortcake to strawberry shampoo. Thinner to medium bodied with strong carbonatoin and a harsh kick on the end. Flavor is some under ripe green strawberry along with the vines, toast, grains, old champagne. Interesting but not my cup of tea.

(12oz bottle) clear gold, tight white bubbles. Nose of strawberry, crackers, cream cheese, sweet and sugary. Watery too. Taste of strawberry, wheat, dry grain, not much here, watery.

UPDATED: MAY 16, 2013 Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy strawberry with some faint dusty notes. It pours a transparent a mostly transparent gold with quite a bit of sediment floating around. It has a two finger white head that eventually settles to a thick film and leaves behind some light webbing on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick note of toffee. The toffee is quickly dominated by moderate strawberry with a hint of lemon and grass. It’s light-medium bodied with soft carbonation and mouthfeel. Overall, if you like strawberries, this is a pretty solid summer thirst quencher. After trying all the three 2013 Longshot beers, I was surprised to find out this is the one I like the most.

Pop the cap and a blast of strawberry hits the air. It has a big strawberry taste that is pretty close to jolly rancher / candy flavor. It pours a medium yellow color and has a nice fizz to it. Just to sweeet to me and not much else there.

12oz bottle. Clear straw body topped by small white head. Aroma is moderately sweet, fresh strawberry. Taste is moderately sweet, strawberry, light bread, lemon. Soft light body, light effervescence, quite drinkable. Pleasantly surprised by this one -- I could even see drinking it again.
