The first of this year’s winners, Dave Anderson, works in the packaging department at Sam Adams. His submission, a Strawberry Lager, is described as “a bright and fresh wheat beer, with a strong strawberry character balanced with toffee and citrus notes – the brewer’s vision of the perfect summertime beer to enjoy after a round of golf on a hot day. Brewed with fresh strawberries, this beer pours a bright golden color and imparts a malty sweetness with hints of lemon and earthiness. Strawberry Lager finishes with a wonderful intensive strawberry flavor without being overwhelming and leaves a lingering creamy sweetness on the palate.”

Pop the cap and a blast of strawberry hits the air. It has a big strawberry taste that is pretty close to jolly rancher / candy flavor. It pours a medium yellow color and has a nice fizz to it. Just to sweeet to me and not much else there.

Bottle; poured a dull gold color with a large whitish head. Aroma of strawberries, citrus and yeast. Alot of strawberry in the aroma. Flavor also had a good dose of strawberries; some earthiness, sweetness, and zest (lemon?) A solid fruit beer

12oz bottle. Clear straw body topped by small white head. Aroma is moderately sweet, fresh strawberry. Taste is moderately sweet, strawberry, light bread, lemon. Soft light body, light effervescence, quite drinkable. Pleasantly surprised by this one -- I could even see drinking it again.

12oz bottle poured ibto a shaker. Pours a dark gold with lots of little chunkies floating around. Aroma is straight strawberry lemonade. Taste is light tart. Strawberry puree and lemon zest with some bready yeast. Light bodied with a thin texture. Lively carbonation and a surprisingly long finish. Overall, pretty good. This would ne a great beer for drinking outsude on a hot day.

"You got beer in my strawberry lemonade!" You got strawberry lemonade in my beer!" Nice fresh strawberry aroma. Not enough beer in the taste department but goes down pretty easy.

Bottled. Poured light-medium golden with a well-retained, sticky white head. The aroma picked up semi-sweet strawberries, cream, and a little vanilla.. fresh berry seeds right on the back of the nose.. no complaints. The flavor found dank, tacky strawberry seeds throughout.. light pale and biscuity malt supported.. finished with sharp seeds and a touch of lemon zest.. I didn’t enjoy the way this moved through the mouth. Lighter-bodied, tart, and scratchy on the palate.. drinkable, but not very enjoyable.

Bottle: Huge white head atop a golden pour. Nose is fresh strawberries... nice. The fruitiness tries to hold its own in the taste, but the malt and grass wins in the end. Finishes really well as all three crisply converge. Not bad at all; I think this hits the intended mark.
