The first of this yearís winners, Dave Anderson, works in the packaging department at Sam Adams. His submission, a Strawberry Lager, is described as ďa bright and fresh wheat beer, with a strong strawberry character balanced with toffee and citrus notes Ė the brewerís vision of the perfect summertime beer to enjoy after a round of golf on a hot day. Brewed with fresh strawberries, this beer pours a bright golden color and imparts a malty sweetness with hints of lemon and earthiness. Strawberry Lager finishes with a wonderful intensive strawberry flavor without being overwhelming and leaves a lingering creamy sweetness on the palate.Ē

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a straw color ridden with chunky yeast particles. The head is a two finger white shade. Itís nicely creamy and retains acceptably. TONS of lacing on the glass, too. But still...the bodyís a mess. S: The strawberry notes come through strongly at first. When allowed to open up, slight (balanced) diacetyl and noble hopping comes through, as well. The first few whiffs, though, were ridiculously sweet - almost like it was a strawberry soda instead of a beer. T: Itís got a little more balance than I expected. The first part is where the fruit qualities reside; after that, it morphs into a pre-pro pilsner, displaying notes of noble hops, biscuity malt/yeast, and mild adjunct. Some strawberry sweetness returns in the finish, a bit excessively at times. Nonetheless a successful warm weather refresher, nor does it strike me as being disgustingly artificial. M: Not as dry as I like my lagers, but itís a fruit beer. It could be a bit less cloying on the back end at least. Still, I like its drinkability. Completely under-carbonated, though. O: On occasion, Iím a sucker for a good lager. And also on occasion, Iím a sucker for a good fruit beer. This fulfills both quotas reasonably well. At the end of the day, itís rock-solid mindless refreshment, no more, no less.

Bottle. Pours clear golden. Floaters in the glass. Nose is strawberry cream. Taste is strawberry cream candy. Lager sharpness. Better than I thought it was going to be.

A - Pours a honey golden color with an off-white milky cap. Good retention and lacing. S - Strawberry candy aroma, strawberry wafers, fruit roll up, light grainy malts underneath, T - Follows the nose with strawberry hard candy, sweet but not cloying, some grassy hops adds a light bitterness and thereís some tartness as well. Pale malts, are light and crisp. Finishes slightly tart with some faint astringency. M - Light and somewhat creamy, good amount of stingy carbonation, light bodied. Judging from the name I didnít have high hopes, but this is better than I expected. This is more of a candy strawberry flavored brew. The candy fruit flavor is nice and not totally artificial. A descent summer brew. Serving type: bottle 06-28-2013

12oz bottle (courtesy of Headbanger) poured into a Shaker at 40į. Color is a hazy gold with a bunch of floaties, good carbonation and a small white head. Aroma is a bright strawberry scent. It has a lighter body with a crisp mouth feel. Flavor is a Kool-Aid like strawberry taste, a touch of grain and a dry finish. Overall its just ok, I like a good fruit flavored brew but in this the strawberry comes across a bit fake.

Good summer beer. The strawberry aroma was strong and fresh. Champagne color that had particulates at the bottom of the bottle. Crisp clean palate with a somewhat dry finish. Refreshing blend of strawberries and pilsner malt. Not overly sweet. It is better cold and not too gimmicky.

Speckled golden straw yellow with a large mammoth wispy head. Nice at firs with strawberries, cream, shortcake and sweet malt. Taste adheres to the law of diminishing returns though. After a few sips, I donít really want anymore. Sweet and almost cloying with strawberries and bready malt.

Bottle: Pours slightly hazed gold, with a tall, off-white head. Aroma is natural strawberry (complete with shortcake) Taste is more of the shortcake, lesser strawberry.... bread, wheat, candy. Initially, very good....but finishes a little grainy and grassy.
