3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz bottle from spring mix pack, Kroger, Bridge St. Dark barely-translucent brown; decent looking frothy brown head shows solid lacing and becomes a thin ring. Aroma -real- maple, malt, chocolate, nuts, dirt. Flavor similar but a bit less impressive; there is clearly real maple syrup in here. Medium body, frothy in the mouth, medium-heavy stickiness. I appreciate the real maple in this and it creates a nice flavor. If they’d make this beer a little more substantial on the whole this could be really special.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle - Pours brown/reddish brown, white head, somewhat creamy. Aroma of dark sweet malt, like chocolate flavored coffee, with pancakes. Sweet first sip, some coffee, nuts, baker’s chocolate, and a thin hint of soy sauce and ginger. Med to light body.

Watered down. Can taste the pecan flavor but it is a bit watered down with tobacco juice.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a deep dark copper color that appears almost black in the glass with mahogany edges and a one finger off-white head that quickly settles into a thin, lasting ring. Minimal spotty lacing left behind.
Slightly smokey aroma with a balance of roasted and sweet malt notes. Deeply roasted notes at first with hints of coffee bean, oatmeal and toast followed by caramel, toffee and nut. I’m not really picking up much maple/syrup but the pecans begin to show as it warms.
On the lighter end of medium bodied with a combination of dry roast, sweet malt and pecan notes. Again, I’m only picking up the faintest bit of maple but the pecan stands out a lot more than in the nose, especially in the finish. Slightly smokey and acrid up front with some toast, burnt malt, coffee bean and oatmeal but this is balanced by sweeter notes of caramel, toffee, hazelnut and some biscuit. The roasted pecan flavor lingers long in the finish giving an otherwise mediocre beer another layer of flavor.

4.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
This beer is my all time favorite Sam Adams beer. I was highly disappointed to find out it has been discontinued for the time being. It is a nice light beer with just enough maple and pecan flavor.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Best by date of 09.02.2014.
Pored from a 12 oz bottle into a tumbler on 02.04.14.
A: Black/red. Some see through. Tan head.
S: Caramel mostly, also coffee, chocolate, toffee.
T: Caramel, coffee, toffee are dominant. Pecan, chocolate, maple are there too.
M: Creamy. Very light feeling in the mouth.
O: This is like having a maple bar in drinkable form. It has maple syrup in it, according to the label, and you can tell. There’s quite a bit of complexity too. This is a great porter.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
I can definitely find the maple syrup and pecans in the aroma - it’s like a beer pancake. I am also getting roasted malt, some milk chocolate and a cappuccino-like coffee scent. Very good and complex aroma for such a mainstream brewery. Looks great; brown, nearly black with off white head that is somewhat sticky and dense. Flavor is roasty, bitter with tons of pecan and some syrup in the aftertaste. A little too sweet; I don’t think I could drink more than one, but I knew what I was getting into when I bought this. Weak palate, but in my opinion that’s what most separates craft beers from their mass-produced counterparts. I can’t believe how much I liked this offering from Sam Adams. Very complex and unique.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours unclear dark thick amber with a creamy sandy colored head and a bit of a ring of lacing. The aroma brings toasted malts and fresh nutty maple as well. The flavor brings a brilliant blend of maple, caramel, nuts, and toasted malts that go down smooth on a lighter body.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz bottle -
Found in the Spring sampler pack, picked up at Costco for $22.99 a case. Not bad. Aroma is definitely nutty, like crushed walnut/pecan shells. A touch of alcohol also shows up. Subtle maple syrup also makes an appearance as does a Tootsie Roll pop with just a bit of root beer. It smells kind of sweet too, but it doesn’t come thru on the flavor.
I think with a bit more complexity and sweetness this beer would be great. Light sweetness brings out the maple/pecan flavors, but the porter notes are lacking a bit. It’s a pretty simple beer and done well. No complaints.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
This pours a dark brown color with a foamy beige head. The aroma is very malty with hints of maple and pecan. The flavor is thinner than expected but rather interesting. There are some very nutty tones with just a touch of maple shinning through. Not my favorite Sam Adams brew yet has an interesting flavor for the ingredients.
