COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This rich dark gingerbread stout entices with the aromas of the holidays. The flavor of gingerbread comes alive, beginning with the smooth sweetness and heartiness of dark roasted malts and a touch of wheat. But it’s the intensity and spices of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, & ginger that add a wicked kick for a jolly playful brew full of merry mischief.

A: pours a dark brown with absolutely no light pass through. Head is a creamy dark tan. S: Sweet caramel malt with notes of anise, gingerbread, and alcohol. T: A dark sour ale with strong flavors of clove. The gingerbread taste is pretty subtle. Clove cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, and nutmeg dominate this brew. Not so much a gingerbread ale as it is a spiced dark flemish sour. M: I expected it to be more creamy based on the smell. Not much carbonation to speak of. O: I guess I expected more of a thick gingerbread stout. I was surprised, but not disappointed, by this beer. It is tasty in that same weird way that I like to dip my French fries into my frosty...or chocolate covered pretzels. Sour and spice make a nice combination that hides the 9% quite well.

Bottle. The look is dark, black in color, and tannish in color. The smell is gingerbread, heavily spiced, metallic, molasses, and baking. The taste is roasted, so spiced, ginger, black licorice, and ok.

Pours black with a thin mocha head...looks thick. Aroma is cinnamony but definitely reminiscent of gingerbread. Flavor is roasty cinnamon/allspice/clove with a hint of roasty/burnt malts like molasses but again...i see where they are going with the gingerbread thing. Mouthfeel is medium/full with a roasty/spicy finish.

22 oz. bottle. Did a side-by-side comparison with Bison Organic Gingerbread Ale and the SA won. Get way to cap off a night of tasting on 29 Dec 2012. Deep black color in a snifter. Aromas of gingered bread, chocolate malt, cinnamon, and a touch of molasses. Flavor is roasted malt dominant with licorice, ginger snap cookies and molasses. Medium body, soft carbonation with a light silky texture. Some ABV warmth after the sip.Overall, I think this is slightly above average and a nice holiday brew.

22 oz. bottle. Batch #1. A jet-black pour with a thick and creamy chestnut head. Gingerbread cookies! Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, caramel, a wheaty graininess, and some roasted malts in the aroma. Goes down medium-bodied and rather smooth. Caramel, some molasses, and a touch of candi sugar upfront taste-wise. Kinda banana bready/fruit cakey. Touches of raisins & figs here and there. The finish is mildly bitter with some roasted black coffee and dark chocolate. Plenty of the aforementioned wintry spices present the whole way through. The alcohol is hidden quite nicely. Another surprise from Sam Adams.

Bottle from Spirits Crossroads. Pours black with a nice tan head. Aroma is of sweet and spicy gingerbread, roast, light chocolate and some light bitterness. Taste is complex, the gingerbread is nicely balanced, the spices are noticeable, but never over the top, some cinnamon, light roast, mild chocolate. Everything works in this very well. Nice work SA.

22 ounce bottle. Opague brown, black color topped by a thick bubbly tan head. Aroma or sweet roasted malt, molasses and gingerbread. Rich chewy roasted malt flavor with obvious gingerbread flavor. Molasses, raisins, figs and all the spices are here. Nice to sip this by the fireplace or chiminea. Thick and rich with a nice treacle-like finish. Some resiny hops as well.
