COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Samuel Adams Mighty Oak Ale is the winner of our 2011 Beer Lover’s Choice® campaign. This brew combines the malty sweetness of an ale with the complexity of oak aging for an overall well-balanced beer. The aroma has a subtle earthiness from the UK hops, while distinct notes of oak come through in the flavor of this amber brew. The vanilla and caramel oak character is balanced by the sweetness and subtle roastiness of our blend of malts for a smooth dry finish.

Pailhead (3858) - Plymouth, Michigan, USA - JAN 16, 2012
Bottle: The aroma consists of light-moderate caramel, toffee, light vanilla, and a touch of oak (light enough that it could be power of suggestion). It pours a transparent amber with a two finger off-white head that fades to a thin film within thirty seconds or so. There is some nice webbing left behind for lacing. The flavor starts with light-moderate caramel and toffee. The finish has some sweet vanilla notes that come across like vanilla extract. There are also some faint oak flavors in the finish. As this warms to room temperature some apple notes start to come through. Light-medium bodied with soft carbonation and mouthfeel. Overall, the extract-like qualities of the vanilla just aren’t working for me and they significantly wear on me after only a couple sips.

Clear amber pour with ring of offwhite head. Sweet caramel nose is actually kinda nice, and transfers into flavor with other malty backbone flavors. Not too sweet, but on the sweet side. As far as amber ales go, i’ve had much worse, but there is still nothing really special here.

Bottle @ home. Clear, red orange appearance with a tan head. Toasty toffee, caramel malty, light woody aroma. Bland caramel malty flavor. Little oak. Bleh.

12 ounce bottle from a mixed 12 pack. I barely get any oak or vanilla in the nose, but it is there to a scant degree. What I do get is the insufferable yeast estery aromas that is typical of most Sam Adams beers. It’s an obnoxious toffee-caramel character. Not much else happening here. Transparent amber-colored body with a smallish manilla colored head present. Not much lacing. Pretty weak head. Starts pretty sweet and just sort of malty. The middle has more sweetness and maltiness. Some of the awful yeast character rears its ugly head in the middle. The finish is more sweet and malty with caramel flavors. Not really any oak. This beer is one-dimensional, and that dimension is suck.

Vinous, maybe a little oak, maybe hints of bubblegum, generally a vague fruitiness. Sweetish flavors, thickish palate, tart astringent finish with hints of sour apples. In sum, not very good. Not amber but darker reddish brown. Virtually no head and not much carbonation in the glass either.

Not much oak in aroma or taste. Clear, reddish, color with average head. Modest hop addition to malty brew.

1/10/11. 12oz bottle thanks to PorterPounder! Super clear light amber pour with a small dirty khaki head that sticks and laces a teensy bit. Sweet aroma of caramel, a teensy bit of roast, more sweetness, and just barely a hint of tannic woodiness. Sweet caramel entry with an almost dark fruit sweetness, a touch of vanilla, and barely, BARELY a bit of tannic woodiness. Finishes dry and slightly bitter. Meh.

Tallahassee, Fl - Publix Supermarket - Blairstone & Park - 12 oz bottle. Sparkling dark copper pour, nice soft, slightly off-white head that leaves a wee bit of lacing. Aroma is slight, with some very brief vanilla notes, a hint of peppery spiciness. Flavor is chewy with some nuttiness, a hint of caramel. some wisps of vanilla and just a brief hint of bitter citrus in the finish. thick, velvety smooth mouthfeel. Solid. Part of their Brewer’s Choice Variety 12-Pack.

Pours a beautiful amber color. Aroma is weak; only slightly malty. Flavor is generally...okay. It’s not quite as bold as I was expecting from the name. Slight bit of nuttiness. Nothing to write home about. Although there is a slight aftertaste of something that I cant quite put my finger on. Overall, just okay.
