COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a brew for adventurous beer drinkers. It is brewed with four malts: two row pale Harrington, Munich malt, chocolate malt, and a rare peat smoked malt commonly used by distillers of Scotch malt whiskey. This unique malt gives Samuel Adams® Scotch Ale its distinct, subtle smoky character and deep amber hue. Samuel Adams® Scotch Ale is brewed using traditional English hops, Goldings and Fuggles. This is a big brew dominated by malt flavors and aromas, rich and full bodied, slightly sweet. This challenging beer is not for everyone. A high original gravity, hop bitterness, and peat smoke character yield a robust, yet smooth and balanced ale, for the consumer of rich and complex ales. First produced in 1995 Samuel Adams® Scotch Ale was briefly retired in 2000. Happily, its cult following demanded the return of this brew. Brewed with a small amount of peated malt, commonly used in the production of Scotch whiskey, imparting its smoky signature. This peat smoke note is artfully integrated with, and complemented by, this rich, full bodied, malty ale, robust and complex. Samuel Adams Scotch Ale takes nearly five weeks, from the start of the brew through the final conditioning, to create. Most ales are complete after only two to three weeks.

Bottle. Pours amber brown with a creamy white head. Aroma very light, not getting much more than smoke and malt. Sharp flavor, rather a bit like hickory chips and bacon bits with apple. Apple smoked bacon? Meat beer? Maybe. I’ve only had a handful of scotch ales, so maybe I’m missing something here. Aftertaste like whiskey with out the kick. Nice and thick feel, very solid. I was turned off by this at first, but now I’m getting to like it. I think I would have a better reaction to this if it was cold outside.

Bottle. A- Malty, caramel, peat. A- Dark mahogany color, hazy liquid, off white head. T- Malty, burnt caramel, peat, subtle smoke. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, malty finish. O- Pretty standard and boring. Very malty with a tinge of smoke on the finish. A hint of bitterness but really just a malt bomb.

Bottle. Amber red with a fair head. Very malty with a nice light roast to it. Fair but lacking in substance.

Part of their mixed Cabin 12-pack purchased in Vermont. Pour a clear light copper with golden highlights. Warm cap with good retention and lacing. Caramel malt aromas with dark fruit notes and hints of nuts. Wet mouthfeel with a nice dryish finish. Smoked malt taste giving whiskey notes. Some dark fruits and decent hops. Hints of wood even. A better than average Scotch ale. Quite liked this one.

Bottle from a mixed pack at work. Really a surprisingly nice scotch ale with sweet dark malt and a hint of smoke. Tasty.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a tulip glass. The appearance is an awesome clear red amber with a small white head. The aroma has that scotch ale dirty sock aroma that I do not like. The taste is malt and alcohol.

Pours a ruby brown with loads of carbonation. Cream head. Malt aroma. Deep malt taste with a solid scotch middle. Sweet roasted finish. Sticky mouthfeel.

12oz bottle. Aroma is very light, increasing over time, with hints of caramel and hops. Pours crystal clear deep copper with minimal head and slight, quickly-diminishing lacing. Taste is slightly sweet, slightly caramel, with some maltiness and breadiness, not strong or particulalry sweet. Finishes bitter with lingering grapefruit. Not bad, but probably won’t buy again.

Pours a clear copper color with a medium off white head. The aroma is caramel, a very light hop character. Taste is also malty with caramel and some mild earthy hops. Good beer to be mass produced

I poured it from the bottle into a glass. It pours a reddish brown color with a nice off-white head and some lacing. The aroma was a little weak with hints of smoke, bread, and sweet malt. The taste was toffee, and faint hints of smoke and chocolate. This was decent. I’m not a huge fan of this style though.
