Commercial Description:
This is a brew for adventurous beer drinkers. It is brewed with four malts: two row pale Harrington, Munich malt, chocolate malt, and a rare peat smoked malt commonly used by distillers of Scotch malt whiskey. This unique malt gives Samuel Adams® Scotch Ale its distinct, subtle smoky character and deep amber hue. Samuel Adams® Scotch Ale is brewed using traditional English hops, Goldings and Fuggles. This is a big brew dominated by malt flavors and aromas, rich and full bodied, slightly sweet. This challenging beer is not for everyone. A high original gravity, hop bitterness, and peat smoke character yield a robust, yet smooth and balanced ale, for the consumer of rich and complex ales. First produced in 1995 Samuel Adams® Scotch Ale was briefly retired in 2000. Happily, its cult following demanded the return of this brew. Brewed with a small amount of peated malt, commonly used in the production of Scotch whiskey, imparting its smoky signature. This peat smoke note is artfully integrated with, and complemented by, this rich, full bodied, malty ale, robust and complex. Samuel Adams Scotch Ale takes nearly five weeks, from the start of the brew through the final conditioning, to create. Most ales are complete after only two to three weeks.

No disrespect to Belhaven or McEwans, but I like this brew better. I love the extra peat smoked malts and the smoked rich flavor. The worst mistake in the world by The Boston Beer Company was to stop brewing this.

Back in law school, this was probably my favorite beer. We called it liquid smoke because of that peat smoked flavor. It sucked that they stopped production on it in 2000. hey have brought it back, but I have not found it in New York.

Good, good, good! My favorite Sam Adams brew. If I knew where to buy 6 packs of this I would be set. So far I’ve only found it in the variety pack, which has on 2 or 3 Scottish Ale’s out of 12, I think.

Reddish brown in color and a sweet aroma of cherries. Hoppy finish and a mellow scotchy taste. Great beer.

I am rating this from distant memory, but I do remember a lovely thick, dark, and sweet beer. Very sad to hear about its discontinuance.
