Samuel Adams® Summer Ale is an American wheat ale. This summer seasonal uses malted wheat, lemon zest and Grains of Paradise, a rare pepper from Africa first used as a brewing spice in the 13th century, to create a crisp taste, spicy flavor and medium body. The ale fermentation imparts a background tropical fruit note reminiscent of mangos and peaches. All of these flavors come together to create a thirst quenching, clean finishing beer perfect for those warm summer days.

Bottle. The colour is cloudy orange-yellow; the fine off white foam builds a two finger thick head with an inviting crater.

The smell is very fruity with a complex sour note of hops, wheat and some aroma hops.

The taste is an explosion of flavours; I noted lemon (peels and juice), some dry hoppy hops, sour wheat-beer notes, but also an odd chemical touch The long generous aftertaste got notes of malt and citric.

The carbonation is very potent (medium sized bubbles) and very refreshing.

I found this as a fine witbeer with a twist. Nice to see that “summer” isn’t equal with “lager sans flavour”!

A light wheat ale, that is easy to drink, only a slight yeast aroma and flavour.

Draft at Joe’s. Pours orange gold with a white head. Flavor is wheat, orange, lemon. A bit of pepper in the finish.

Pours a cloudy pale yellow the color of pineapples. No head to speak of, just a very tiny ring of white bubbles. Smells of apples, floral hops, some bready fruitiness I can’t place. Maybe those are the grains of paradise? In the flavor, a heavy wheat flavor, with some subtle citrus and spicy notes. Very mild sweetness. Light body, no bitterness. Summer Ale isn’t fantastic by any means, but it is the taste of the season. What is it about wheat that’s so good during summer?

12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, best before 11/2014. Pours hazy bright golden color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of lemon, orange, apricot, pear, apple, coriander, pepper, wheat, cracker, bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of pale malt, spice, and yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, orange, apricot, pear, apple, coriander, pepper, wheat, cracker, bread, light honey, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Minimal herbal spice bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, orange, apricot, pear, apple, coriander, pepper, wheat, cracker, bread, light honey, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good balance and robustness of pale malt, spice, and yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/yeast/spice balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 5.3%. Overall this is a nice spiced pale wheat ale style. All around good balance and robustness of pale malt, spice, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Interesting I thought I had it already rated. It was thin and easy to drink with that nice tickling sensation of Sam Adams’ beers.

Pours a hazy orange with a medium white head. The aroma is wheat and extremely citrusy. The taste is similar. I do not think this beer is very well balanced.

A dreaded American Wheat, going undercover as a ’Summer Ale’. Boring. Wheaty. A refreshing afterthought of a beer.
