Orange, gold, hazy pour. Thin head. Citrus taste with faint vanilla and wheat. Solid summer brew. Goes down easy, pleasant bitter aftertaste.

(Draft @ Sherlock’s, Bay Area, Houston, TX): Pours an orangish body, not purely see-through. White head, small & diminishing. Very malty aroma Some spices, some hops. Very weak. Somewhat bitter, some spice & flowers. Floral on the aftertaste. Carbonated, but flat on flavor.

On draft in Milwaukee. Appearance is a slightly murky orange/yellow hue, thin white foam sustains, watery lacing quickly falls. Smell is a range of spices (nutmeg, vanilla, paradise seeds), light malts, yeast, wheat, and grassy hops. Taste is spicey throughout, the wheat yeast dominates, bread and pale malts enter midway, slight chalk, finishes very dry. Medium-bodied, creamy smooth texture, ample carbonation. Good spice and flavor profile, unique, can be a bit biting for drinking in larger quantities, refreshing ale that surprised me as i am not a huge fan of the style.

12oz bottle from LCBO at $13.45 for a six-pack. Pours a cloudy pale gold with a head that fades quickly. Light metallic aroma. Initial taste has a gentle yeast spiciness (is that those "grains of paradise"?), but the taste ends on a watery note. Any wheatness falls squarely into the "American Wheat" category as opposed to Belgian or German. Light mouthfeel. I’ll give this a pass if it comes back to the LCBO next summer.

This inviting wheat ale’s upfront oily citrus zestiness is followed by a tingling spiciness that lingers heavily on the back of the tongue. Hints of black pepper and oranges in the aroma float into the taste and light up the already energetic mouthfeel. Late aromatic coriander and spice notes combine with the bitter grapefruit character toward the end, making the grains of paradise highly noticeable and a welcome addition to this summertime refresher. The mouthfeel is crisp, smooth, and light-bodied; at some points feeling just a little thin. Nonetheless, Sam Adams Summer Ale is a great choice for summer grillouts, and in my case, an excellent, patriotic accompanyment to an awesome fourth of July.
