Samuel Adams® Summer Ale is an American wheat ale. This summer seasonal uses malted wheat, lemon zest and Grains of Paradise, a rare pepper from Africa first used as a brewing spice in the 13th century, to create a crisp taste, spicy flavor and medium body. The ale fermentation imparts a background tropical fruit note reminiscent of mangos and peaches. All of these flavors come together to create a thirst quenching, clean finishing beer perfect for those warm summer days.

12 oz. bottle from sampler pack. Ar: Bread dough, light spice, maybe a bit of peach. Ap: Pours a very hazy light copper-straw with little head or lacing. T: Moderate malty sweetness up front gives way to a somewhat bitter, tart finish, which is really needed to cut through the sweetness. P: Slightly thick and a bit more syrupy than I’d like. O: Decent, but lacks both the refreshing flavor/body and aroma of a good wheat.

Not much of an aroma just a hint of pepper. Gold colour with a short lasting white head. Not much taste, slightly peppery with mineral undertones. Watery feel with a dry mineral finish

Pours a slightly hazy yellow with lots of head. Nicely carbonated good mouthfeel, but slightly medicinal tasting.

Appearance: Slightly hazy body that is a medium shade of golden yellow with a fluffy white head that leaves ample lacing. Aroma: It has a sickly sour aroma that is not very inviting. There is a bit of lemon zest but not very fresh smelling. Taste: There are some good qualities and some bad. I put it this way because at first I really did not like this drink, but some of it started to warm up to me. There is this flavor that tastes a bit like what I can only assume dishwater tastes like. There is this lemon twang and this muddy mess of sickly tasting flavors like old vegetables in the refrigerator. On a positive note there is a smooth wheat flavor that tries to come to the rescue at the end. If I had a 2 second memory I would probably really enjoy this beer. Palate: The palate for this beer is pretty bad. The combination of flavors makes it undrinkable to me. Overall: I find this to be a beer of poor quality that I would not recommend or drink again.

It’s pretty good, it’s got that warm summer time flavor that every brewery tries to hit, but it’s not perfect. maybe a little bit too wheaty?

Rated based on notes taken 23 Apr 2012 -- This is an okay summer brew, meant to be refreshing, it suffices but doesn’t excel.

11th July 2014 sees me on Balboa Island in Newport Beach, the women folk are shopping and I am thirsty, so the only option is the ’Village Pub’, the trendy, expensive and foodie place on the main drag. In here the tap selection is truly crap for a beer hunter, so I had this and a ’Rebel IPA’. Anyway this hazy, slightly sour and citrusy brew was refreshing and just what I needed at the time. Did not really test my taste buds but it did not upset them either. I am not a huge Wheat Ale sort of guy, but I have no problems with this.

UPDATED: AUG 30, 2014 Very refreshing and aptly named beverage. Pleasant citrusy acidity and tartness with a little bit of peppery spice. Clean and light.

Bottle from the hotel bar in Latrobe, PA. This town will forever be known as the town that doesn’t sell craft beer. It’s annoying. Light golden, slightly cloudy. Taste is cereal like with bread elements expected from a wheat. You can taste the light citrus and spice of coriander. It ends rather unpleasantly...almost flat/thin. Lots of lemon peel aftertaste. Nothing special.

Bottle. Backlog. No label taken. Pours yellow gold white head. Nose/taste of toasted cereal, lemon, light wheat/banana and coriander. Lighter bodied.
