3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Appearance: Served up a clear, very dark (for an IPA) amber body with small tan fizzy head the disappeared quickly. Persistent lacing.
Smell: Toasted grain with caramel and tomato paste (weird, I know). Like pink grapefruit with sugar on top. A touch of earthy spiciness.
Taste: A big start of malty breadiness, that RAPIDLY turns to grapefruit. Aftertaste is like a pleasant mixture of bitterness with caramel. Like those caramel apples dipped when the caramel is too hot, leaving only a thin film of caramel over the bitter skin of the apple. Heavy bitterness on the metallic finish with some enduring bitterness. Overall, the effect is like a massively hopped scotch ale.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Texture is smooth.
Overall: I was pleasantly surprised by this one. A very interesting combination. Reminds me a little of Lagunitas Censored Ale (which I very much like as well.)

January 28th, 2012 - Boston Beer Company’s Tasman Red pushes the New Zealand hops profile with new and interesting territory in their Tasman Red Red IPA. It pours a beautiful deep red, and from the almost-crimson brew comes a skunk, pungent, botanical hops, replete with savory boiled artichoke. It’s full and textured, and also new and unexpected. And in the taste, too, artichoke appears, almost like munching on a perfectly cooked artichoke heart, with touches of toffee and caramel to make it a strange, but delicious treat. This flavor profile is bold, but if this is a representative sample, I’m game for new New Zealand hops in my beers.

Bottle. Rich and malty unlike most IPAs. Beautiful murky reddish brown body with a yellowish tan head. Lots of hops on the tongue unlike those absent from the nose. More of an Amerixan Strong or dry barley wine than an IPA. Very good.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Malty and sweet aroma, dark red appearance, earthy and balanced taste. Tasmanian hops work well. Sweeter than normal for an IPA, and better red IPA’s are in the market, but overall worth a taste.

(Rating #5167)

24 oz. bottle poured reddish brown into a stemmed tulip beer glass. Lasting tan head with a fair amount of carbonation. Aroma of toffee and caramel malts. Lots of malt in this one that needs a little more hop bitterness. Thick mouth feel with a coffee taste. Filling and lasting finish.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours reddish-brown with a medium tan head. Nose is charcoal, grapefruit, apples. Rather sweetish flavor. Acidic grapefruit finish. A little watery. Inoffensive but doesn’t knock my socks off.

12oz bottle poured into my ipa glass. Pours a dark reddish amber color with a thick light tan head that leaves great lacing. Smells of caramel, toffee, citrus and pine. Tastes of all the same things in the smell. Mouthfeel is medium and oily with decent carbonation. Pretty good beer concept that works. Nice maltiness and hop balance making this a tasty brew. Wonder what some age would do for this since its ageable according to the bottle.
