3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from South Bay Liquor: Poured a beautiful dark brown liquid with a thick frothy head which eventually retreated. Aroma is fair with an initial aroma of lightly roasted malts that have a background scent of milk chocolate and a whiff of some unknown spice. The closest smell I can remember that was similar to this is the smell of freshly dried Ironlak spray paint. The drink attracts my intention from the beginning with a soft chocolate malt base while a dash of spice becomes apparent in the finish and reminds me sort of some rich home made mole sauce. Well balanced throughout the session but there is a strange astringent aftertaste in the finish.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a deep brownish black from the bottle with thin tan head that leaves light lace. Aroma of fruity yeast, hints of chocolate, and cinnamon spice. Taste is more toward chocolate and spice, not chili to me, but still something there, nice balance, nothing over the top. Alcohol is well hidden, soft carbonation, not too bad.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Deep dark brown coloured body with a hint of ruby and violet tints when held up to the light, all with a rich, thick three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of chocolate, chiles (no surprise there), alcohol, metal and some rich roasted malt. Full-bodied; Strong rich roasted malt flavour with some nuts, earth, caramel, toffee and heat from the chiles noticeable, all with a sort of oaky, dry finish showing some alcohol and sweetness. Aftertaste shows a subtle and smooth complexity with spices, heat, alcohol, malt and the chocolate and coffee sweetness/bitterness that holds a nice complexity. Overall, a surprisingly nice beer with a ton of flavour, no overt heat or chiles, but a well-balanced and well-crafted beer - definitely worth trying if you can get it and itís chilly outside! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Costco in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia on 17-October-2014 for US$30,99/case (24-pack) sampled at home in Washington on 09-January-2015 in celebration of Boston being chosen as the US host city for the Olympic BID - good luck Boston - bring the Olympics back to the US of A.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Oily black, dark taupe, stiff head. Lightly sweet, vanilla and light spice aroma. Tangy, bittersweet chocolate, light spicy notes. Mouthy but not viscous... oddly Styrofoam feeling...Lots of bulk but not weighty. Very slow burn. On tap, Brass Tap, Tallahassee Midtown.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: DEC 31, 2014 12 oz bottle served in a snifter. Date notched BB Feb. 2015 (?; no year indicated).
Pours clear dark mahogany with a fine looking, creamy tan head that recedes too quickly.
Aroma: sweet and a bit boozy, with hints of raisins, dates, cocoa, pancakes, burnt sugar and toffee.
Flavor: Moderately complex with all of the ingrediants readily detectable. Mild but obvious chili presence. Sweet overall, and a bit too sweet up front, but it eventually works out to an acceptable bitter/sweet balance given the chili, chocolate and other flavors.
Feel: smooth mouth feel; very good carbonation; full body with mild chili heat.
O: a sweet but intriguing brew thatís certainly worth trying. Did not mix too well with the end of my dinner but worked great as an after meal sipper.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bought in the mega 24 pack for 25 bucks. Dark pour with mocha head. Smell is roast, cocoa and sweet cinnamon sugar. Taste is similar but shows the mild pepper comes thru with a bigger cinnamon component. Quite nice and one of the better SA brews Iíve had in a while.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
"coming in 2.6% stronger than one of my favorite beers, Chocolate Bock, and itís a bit different on several levels, though there are simlarities in the chocolate flavor especially. aroma similar to the flavor but too subdued, hence the lower mark. the chili only makes an appearance (and even then itís subtle) in the finish, which is the only disappointing element of this beer. it was thicker in body, but not necessarily richer. abv not very evident, smooth body. interesting mix of chocolate, hops, cinnamon, and the kinda-there chili. i could see how it may be seen as muddled, but i dug it as a change of pace. for the price, iíd get it once or twice a year...but it poses no threat to the choc bock."
