This unique double IPA takes the style’s origins a step further. IPAs were born out of making an ale that could sustain a long voyage. For our take, we were inspired by the indomitable Capt. James Cook whose 3rd voyage made him the first to navigate a treacherous route from England to New Zealand to the Pacific Northwest. Using Cascade hops from each of these regions we created a brew that’s citrusy, earthy and full of bold character.

Resiny pine candy. Pours cloudy honey amber with a very thick foamy off white head that coats the glass as it very slowly (glacially) fades. Pine and grapefruit with a hard candy sweetness. Clean bitter on the finish. The hops/malt balance on this is really well done. Hops are very noticeable but not overwhelming as they are tempered by a thick mouthfeel and a mild sweetness.

This is batch 1. I’m awed. A perfectly balanced DIPA. Lovely hop aroma of grapefruit and spice. Lovely malt backbone with a perfect bitterness.

Att en jätte som Samuel Adams kan lyckas med något som en dubbelipa är stort. Fin arom med mycket bra smaker. Här finns de rätta smakerna o hade beskan rullat något mjukare över tungan så hade det blivit toppbetyg.

Pours copper with a good sized beige head. Nose off pine and floral hops. Medium plus body. Resin mouthfeel. Flavor is caramel malts, lots of hop;s. 5 finger foamy beige head. Lots of pine with a good dose of floral for aroma. Med body. Flavor is resin, mild roast caramel, and a lot of floral. It burns just a bit on the tongue’s edges. Finishes quite hoppy. Good drink.

From bottle. Pours a sort of burnt orange with a bit of off-white, mostly dissipating head. Decent lacing. Not much hop presence in the nose, mostly malt. Not much hop presence in the taste, mostly malt. Aftertaste is clean. Not bad, but would have preferred more Cascade and less malt in the mix.

Pour from a 22oz bomber. Darker amber brew with two fingers of off white head. Aroma of earth, resin, pine, brown sugar. Taste is sweet caramel and brown sugar at the very start, heavy sweet malty with deep resin in bitter in the finish and ends with a moderately bitter hops flourish. Lingering sweet and sticky. A heavy IPA, a ponderous IPA...

Bomber. Nose is heavy citrus with a hint of pine and toffee. Clear dark rusty orange with a big heavy lacing beige head. Flavor is bitter with some light sweetness and a caramel backdrop.

Batch No.1 (Oct, 2011?) A: Amber with a finger of yellow foam which falls slowly to a sheet of the same. Near web lace and excellent clarity. S: Citrus, grapefruit, hints of resin, some bubble gum tones are all bolstered by a caramel malt backbone. T: Flavor is all malt. Tastes like a bittered SA Boston Lager. Fail. M: Thin on moderate body for the style with medium carb and a semi dry finish. O: Well, looks and smells nice, but the flavor lets this beer down too far to be respectable. Too bad. I actually bet this beer would age well. Serving type: bottle 11-26-2011
