This unique double IPA takes the style’s origins a step further. IPAs were born out of making an ale that could sustain a long voyage. For our take, we were inspired by the indomitable Capt. James Cook whose 3rd voyage made him the first to navigate a treacherous route from England to New Zealand to the Pacific Northwest. Using Cascade hops from each of these regions we created a brew that’s citrusy, earthy and full of bold character.

UPDATED: APR 23, 2014 Out of a bottle. Strong bitter hops. Some burnt/malt flavors and hints of lemon. A good level of carbonation. Smooth and easy to drink.

Overall a good DIPA, my only gripe is that it starts to taste syrupy as it warms. Kind of a cloying Christmas lollipop sweetness.

Poured from a bottle. Clear fizzy yellow color, small white head. Citrus and floral hops aroma. Slightly oily hops flavor with a medium bitter finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma of malt and hops. Clear amber colour, with a nice well laced transient head. Fruity, bitter taste, with a bitter hoppy palate.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance had a brown/red body leaves a concave white half finger head that slowly dies into the body. The body is too dark for any carbonation to be seen. Some spotty spiderweb lacing appears and slides gently down the sides of my chalice. The smell had the hops up front with a bit of light malts here and there. The taste was more maltier and the hops are really more subdued. It leaves a malty aftertaste and finish. The palate was about a medium, slightly creamy, sessionable. Overall, this is a good beer and I would have it again.

Good stuff. Nice hoppy aroma that was strong and subtle. Amber-orange color with a decent fizzy white head. Average weight palate with good carbonation. Crisp and full. Very well blended with citrus, pine and floral bitterness. Malt background offered some sweetness with caramel and a little spice. Impressed.

Delicious offering, Sam! A+ appearance, burnt orange color, beat head on any Sam Adams I’ve tried (2 fingers, creamy/frothy, long-lasting). Great lacing. Rich full flavor, citrus and malts, really explodes.

12oz bottle shared. Pours golden orange with white head. The aroma is malt forward, followed by the hops. The flavor is more complex than what you would think. Plenty of hops and malts. Very earthy in the flavor as well. Overall a solid beer from Sam Adams.

Pours deep amber, 2 finger head with very nice lacing. Grapefruit, mango, spice nose. Tastes citrusy, hints of toffee, alcohol is apparent. Full bodied. Finishes somewhat earthy, herbal, more alcohol. On the fence with this one.
