COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This unique double IPA takes the style’s origins a step further. IPAs were born out of making an ale that could sustain a long voyage. For our take, we were inspired by the indomitable Capt. James Cook whose 3rd voyage made him the first to navigate a treacherous route from England to New Zealand to the Pacific Northwest. Using Cascade hops from each of these regions we created a brew that’s citrusy, earthy and full of bold character.

Poured a nice clean amber with a light off white head. The smell is light and caramel with just a touch of piney hops, very lacking in the dry hopping for a double IPA, not even as hoppy as many good single IPAs. The flavor has a nice bitterness to it, with a big caramel malt backbone, much closer to balanced than I like Double IPA’s to be. Not much on hop flavor, just bitterness with lingering malty sweetness. The mouthfeel has a light oily resin to it, but is a bit light on carbonation. With Simcoe becoming so hard to come by, this beer seems like a waste of its talents, to malty, no dry hopping and a bit boring.

I would point out that the Yorkshireman James Cook, beloved of New Zealand and toast of Georgian Britain, died on his third voyage, murdered by enthusiastic locals in Hawaii, poor bastard. This is toward the end of an evening and I have enjoyed a few remarkable ales tonight, yet I still want hops, similar to Cook’s unquenchable thirst for the unknown. This was golden amber in the glass with an enduring white head like a sorbet in a glass on its own. The aroma is complex: fruity initially with tropical aromas of mango, orange peel, guava and ripe melon atop floral hibiscus, limes and perfumy jasmine. The aroma is tops with me. Perfect. The flavour is mouthfilling and genuinely bitter: gooseberry, astringent kiwifruit, lemon mint and savoury chlorophyll. There is an appreciable bitterness that prolongs the experience and rewards the intrepid. Let’s not forget that Cook was a Yorkshireman and appreciated endurance. He’d be happy with this. Aye.

"Not a standout as far as dbl ipas go (one of my higher rated styles) but definitely a nice hoppy, tasty brew. Pine and pineapple on the nose and palate, with a healthy dose of malt, a little spice. Very balanced. The hop profile wasn’t quite what I thought it would be, but it pretty nice nonetheless. Avg for the style, but that says a lot imo. I’ve been spoiled with big IPAs."

Draft at Moriartys. Clear orange brown pour with a good foamy off-white head that reduces to a lasting foam ring and splaces of lace. Strong blend of malts and hops with some unusual flavors. Earthy spices. Woody hops. Lychee nuts. Silly putty. Elephant ear mushrooms. Linoleum. Daisies. Orange Gatorade steaped with wood chips. A little off-putting but not the same old same old.

Draft to taster at Ei8ht Ball. Looks solid; a transparent pale copperish orange with foamy off-white head. Smells of bitter hops and semi-sweet malt. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Could be lighter and dryer with a more fruity hop profile, but decent nonetheless.

Pale amber color with thick white lacing head. Aroma of caramel malt and hops. Earthy is a good description for the overall flavor. Strong, but pleasant alcoholic finish. Pretty good.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Enjoy by July 2014 on the box so this is a bit passed its peak. Aroma is moderately hippy with quite a bit of grapefruit but a stronger dank, pine resin character with a lot of forest floor notes. Medium light toasted bread and light caramel character with some biscuit notes. Light alcohol spice. Pours a fairly clear, chipper amber color with a big, thick, tan head. Not exactly the color I would expect from a DIPA. Moderate lacing with small legs. Flavor is moderately sweet with some lightly toasted bread and light caramel notes. Moderate biscuit and toasted crackers. Medium strong and slightly harsh bitterness with medium light grapefruit pith notes. Moderately strong point resin and dank, earthy hop notes. Light alcohol spice. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation; carbonation had a soft, creamy feel to it. Low, but present hop astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer but the hop character isn’t all that great and the malt character is too dark and strong. I think the malt and the hops clash a bit too. Very much an East Coast IPA.
