COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This unique double IPA takes the style’s origins a step further. IPAs were born out of making an ale that could sustain a long voyage. For our take, we were inspired by the indomitable Capt. James Cook whose 3rd voyage made him the first to navigate a treacherous route from England to New Zealand to the Pacific Northwest. Using Cascade hops from each of these regions we created a brew that’s citrusy, earthy and full of bold character.

By today’s standards, low alcohol for a double IPA, which is a good thing. Dark amber, clear, almost viscous, almost trapping the small bubbles, and leading to a very structured head. Great lacing. Nose of caramel, sweet toasted malts, and floral hops. Mouth is big and full, consistent with appearance. Taste is sweet malts and caramel, significant bitterness, but very little grapefruit, citrus, or pine. Very nice, just tamer than the west coast brewers make now.

Pours a clear dark copper on tap with thin off-white head and lacing. Aroma is slight citrus hops and sweet caramel malt back. Taste is bitter malty trash, not thick and resinous at all. Good attempt but probably still made too much of it to be good.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass. Part of the Sam Adams IPA variety pack. This is one of the easiest to drink double IPAs and my favorite in the variety pack. This has a smooth taste and not as bitter as I expect from a double IPA. The short story describing each of the beers in the variety pack is also interesting to me. I would definitely order this one again. I hope Sam Adams releases some of these outside of the mix pack. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark copper color. Minimal lacing. Starts sweet, has some sour elements, alcohol finish. Dry finish. Unique taste for a 2x ipa, but kind of works.

translucent golden amber with a foamy off-white head. sticky full body with medium-high carbonation.

aroma: citrusy orange rind, honey and caramel malt, and piney simcoe.

taste: sour minerality, citrus rind and pine resin bitterness, sharp kiln malt notes from honey malt.

way too much caramel and honey malt for my taste, and the hops lack any subtlety or complexity.

This was a strange beer. It had a pleasant smell, like flowers. It had a strange flavor at first earthy, flowers etc.. not a pleasant flavor. It had a better finish. I want to try it again to see if this is the way it is supposed to taste.

Aroma is hops, flowers. Appearance: copper color, medium white head. Taste. Mostly nondescipt taste, a little pasty. A very nasty after taste...rotten vegetables? Or just flowers, which smell good but taste awful??? Feel: medium carbonation. Overall...beer is ok, but nothing I would buy again.
