yngwie (3394), Kristiansand, Norway Oct 28, 2007 Bottle. (blue, small, cognac-style corked bottle, 1997 vintage.) As black as can be, with some tan bubbles I suspect is a result of the pouring, not carbonation. The aroma has almost everything one can expect from a beer as black and thick as this one, except that it is very low on hops. There’s molasses, oak, vanilla, coffee, dark syrup, alcohol and beef stock. The thick, oily, sweetish palate has flavors of alcohol, dark syrup, molasses, licorice, something reminiscent of soy, that I can’t really place, it’s quite umami-ish, and finishes in the same way. It is not a beer one needs a full bottle of, 5-10cl is enough, but it is certainly a nice brew. The World Wide Stout I had after this one actually got boring. (070914)
IDunno19 (19), Ames, Iowa, USA Aug 19, 2008 And I think I’m being generous with this one. The only reason I’d rate it this low is because this truly is a knock you out, poison everyone in the room, sipping beer. Not for the faint at heart and don’t expect to drink it twice. Good strong cultural experience though. pik5el (34), Pasadena, Maryland, USA Aug 18, 2008 Eff me. This is not what i expected. Pours like motor oil. Nose of a bunch of dead and moldy dark fruits... maybe plums, hell I don’t know. There could be anything in there. It looks like that freaky thing that ate Tasha Yar in TNG. WTF, man! Is that frickin’ soy sauce I taste? cause that is NOT cool. Soy sauce + beer = nastiness, game over Sam. Time to chug and forget. jonno (151), Japan Aug 15, 2008 Updated: Aug 16, 20081997 vintage. Wow I feel like I just drank soy sauce and cooking wine. I don’t know what to say. There were hints of dark chocolate and sherry, but it is probably a one time only beer Berserkir (25), California, USA Aug 15, 2008 Poured from 8oz bottle. No head. Thick, syrupy, almost black. Aroma is very musty, heavy phenols, slight soy sauce. Flavor is heavy on the soy sauce, with hints of coffee and chocolate, bitter malt ending with a serious mocha aftertaste. It is so thick I cannot tell if I am still tasting it or just cant get the smell out of my nose. kiefdog (390), Tampa, Florida, USA Aug 14, 2008 8oz bottle from Old Colony Liquors (Boston, MA). Pours a dark brown almost black color with no visible carbonation. Aroma is musty and heavy phenol with strong wood, chocolate, brandy, and sweet malty-smoke notes. Flavor is very complex with port-like chocolate and wine flavors, soy sauce, sweet ripe fruit, and heavy molasses and chocolate notes. Sticky sweet robust mouthfeel with long alcohol and sweet candy malt finish. Interesting, but. . . .
