COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Triple Bock is complex, elegant, and has the depth and complexity of a fine cognac, vintage port or an old sherry. Non-carbonated, ruby-black, and very special, Triple Bock should be sipped from a small snifter in a two-ounce serving. This is a beer to savor, and sip slowly. Triple Bock has a brandy-like warmth and a complex melange of fruity, woody, and toffee-like flavors. Let the aroma fill your mouth and nose with rich malt and fruit overtones. Savor and appreciate its enormous character. Serve Triple Bock as you would a fine sherry, at room temperature, in a small snifter. One bottle generously serves two or three. Recork and store standing up. Once poured into a small glass, the layers of aroma and flavor will continue to evolve as the deep ruby brew warms in the hand.

There have been only three vintages produced: 1994, 1995 and 1997, but bottles can still be found in the marketplace. 1994 and 1995 vintages are marked as such on the back label; 1997 vintage is not.

1997 vintage, cool bottle. Dang cork bottom broke off, which then dropped into the bottle upon attempting to remove it with wine bottle opener, which also made the pour a bit difficult and slow. Anyway, it pours a very dark, thick brown with lots of sediment that laces the glass. Swirls stain the glass and leave sediment sticking to the sides. Aroma interesting of alcohol, molasses, raisins, dark dried fruits, caramel, slight chocolate, and maybe a nutty character in there somewhere. Wow, quite complex. Taste is almost overwhelming, but matches the aroma all too well. This is a complex sipper that was thoroughly enjoyed. Will definitely seek out more before they are too difficult to get.

"weird...like the most complex, sweet soy sauce you’ll ever have. i enjoyed it as a treat, but it’s too much. not something i’ll go back for often. worth trying if you’ve never had. re-tasted 1/09 - aroma nearly unbearable, nice appearance, but the flavor is just a bit much. english barleywine it is not!"

Vintage- 1997. Pours a thick oily black with no head. Smells of alcohol, Worcestershire sauce, and molasses. Tastes of syrup and alcohol. Unique, but just too much. Had a hard time finishing a 3 ounce pour.

UPDATED: OCT 17, 2014 The archetypical ’extreme beer’ from the nineties, tasted at seventeen years of age (the beer, that is, not me). No head as expected (and intended), only a couple of beige, small bubbles of air instantly dissappearing entirely; colour a very dark burgundy, like an old port wine, almost black, no fizz. Extremely strong aroma - and by ’extremely’, I mean it was not only noticeable, but even overpowering from a yard away. Smells of soy sauce, fish sauce, old port wine, balsamic vinegar, dried mushrooms, chocolate ’jenever’, oak, brown sugar, vanilla, banana liqueur, peat, liquorice and Worcestershire sauce, as well as something ’animalistic’ not unlike barnyard or - excusez le mot - menure. Complex and dense taste, candied fruit sweetness, very thick and oily mouthfeel (almost chewy), chocolatey malts, candi syrup, lots of soy sauce with a weird - and actually rather unpleasant - saltiness, a taste fortunately rarely encountered in beer; liquorice too, figs, port wine, some wood, finish very long and lasting, sticky, alcoholic but not really astringent, as a very old sherry or madera, lots of retronasal spiciness (thyme, ginger, cloves), citrussy hops, residual sweetness and again that disturbing saltiness. I was a bit horrified to find some solid chunks of protein in the bottom of the bottle which I ingested by accident. Glad I finally tasted this classic, I cannot honestly say I really liked it in all respects, but I can imagine it tasted a lot better in the nineties and I admit I was quite fascinated by it. So far most of these extreme beers have failed to convince me, though I keep finding them very fascinating.

Bottle:   1995 vintage.   Bought this at Charles Street Liquors in Boston about 5 or 6 years ago.   Surprised to find it on the shelf!   Decided to crack it open for my birthday.   Super dark chocolate in color, major alcoholic prune aroma.   Similar on the tongue, almost like a prune soy sauce with hints of black cherry.   Not as bad as I was expecting, but certainly not exceptional.   Warming, a bit alcoholic, but for 18% it seemed perhaps a little less alcoholic than others in the same range.   Viscous on the tongue, thick, a bit syrupy.   Very happy to at least have tried this one.   Lingering prune soy sauce notes.   Shuddering just a bit....

97 vintage quite expensive however given a pour at a ritzy party salty sweet sludgy syrup with heavy alcohol and fruit tones that well did not taste good at all. A lingering woodsy flavor yes but the fruit flavor kinda weird with saltiness as well. Allowed to sit for a few minutes was able to taste a few more notes however in all reality much to do about nothing over a small pour. Seemed kinda like a snobbish way to express you have money to burn and you want everyone to know about it. For the same price of one of these sam triple bocks bottles one can go to Trader Joes and get an entire case(24 Bottles) of Stockyard oatmeal stout.

bottle shared by hoppypocket, thanks david (?) pours unclear and kind of dirty dark brown without a head, some legs sticking perhaps. aggressive beef concentrate, umami-ed gross sweet brown and roasted malts, off-caramel, molasses, off-fruitiness - salty almost rotten sweet and burnt potatoes, cherries, minerals, ashes. almost flat carbonation, full body - oily, sticky, for a cloying mineral-grassy-ashy finish. dis-gus-ting.

This appears to be a 1997 vintage (the year I turned 16). Aroma has lots of roast character and some meatiness but it isn?t complete soy sauce, only a moderate amount. Medium light chocolate with quite a bit of alcohol. No maple character at all but there is some light smokiness. Pours an inky black with a slight oil sheen and no head whatsoever. No lacing and long legs. Flavor has a medium sweetness with some faint maple notes. Medium roast notes with some dark chocolate character. Some dark fruit notes of cherries, berries and prunes. Quite a bit of meatiness and soy sauce, but its not as bad as I was led to believe. Moderate bitterness with quite a bit of alcohol. Lingering chocolate and soy sauce. Mouthfeel is full bodied with pretty much no carbonation. Medium low astringency and moderate alcohol warmth. Overall, an odd beer and better than I expected. I really wanted to try this beer due to all the bad reviews; its not great but better than I expected. There is definitely some meatiness and soy sauce but it is not nearly as strong as I expected. Still quite a bit of chocolate and sweet roast notes.

1995 vintage nip bottle shared by Hoppypocket, thanks a lot for this rarity Mr. DP! Here we go: Pours a dark brown with no head and no lacing except that the liquid coats the glass quite nicely. Nose is of straight soy sauce, funny. There is also a good deal of sugar and raisins. Taste is of alcohol, chocolate, moka and raisins. Body is full and mouthfeel ultra sticky. It is also completely still. It is hot but not 18% hot, seems like time have done it good? Ok, so the nose is pretty weird and the drink itself awkward but I feel like everyone should experience that at least once. It was a good deal of fun overall but I won’t seek this one again.

Bottle. Shared by hoppypocket, thanks! Vintage 1995. Dark ruby brown with a small ring of beige foam. Side by side with Bovril, the aroma was surprisingly similar. Dried raisins too... and mushrooms. Taste is similar and quite salty. Medium body. Almost flat. Salty finish. That’s pretty bad to say the least.

From notes. Enjoyed at the Ashley’s Rare & Vintage Beer TasteFest on June 07. Vintage 1995. The pour is a very dark ruby/light black with no head or carbonation. The aroma is strong on dark fruits, raisins and plums, with a light soy sauce character to it. The smell also packs a little heat on the back end, joining a lingering molasses note. The flavor is a little more geared on the sweetness, overshadowing the dark fruits a bit. There is a bit of licorice, and then dark fruits before transitioning back into the sweetness. The mouth feel is thick, like a strong syrup, with a lighter medium-ish body, and a short, sharp fruity, malty aftertaste
