To create Utopias, the brewers at Sam Adams used traditional brewing ingredients including all four types of Noble hops, which add a slightly earthy, herbal taste. The spiciness of the hops really comes alive. In fact, Utopias MMII has even been described by some as almost "fiery" -- a fitting description for the strongest beer in history. Beyond the special brand of hops, Utopias features ingredients that truly set it apart from other varieties of beer. Utopias MMII contains caramel and Vienna malts for its rich amber color and several different types of yeast including a variety found in champagne. $100 a bottle and it's limited to 3000 bottles, which look like copper brew kettles.

Bottle thanks to Mittenator. Clear amber/copper with no head or carbonation. Aroma is a little hot and smells like molasses and brown sugar. Taste is incredibly complex and awesome. Molasses, butterscotch, brown sugar, toffee, dark fruit. Full body and oily in mouth.

Great chance to taste this. Lots of notes with this. Very brandy like. Figs and lots of alcohol. Very lingering taste. It sits with you for a whole. Solid. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2013 Edition. 710ml bottle pours a dark brown color with no head or lacing. Aroma is alcohol, caramel, vanilla and port wine. Taste is a caramel malty sweetness with some red wine and cognac flavors and a dominant alcohol burn. Heavy body with no carbonation. Flavors are much more complex than I can describe here. This is quite an exquisite brew and if you can afford it, you must try it.

10th Anniversary bottle. Poured into a mini-snifter. Pours a darker copper. The aroma has a lot of rich caramel, creme brŻlťe, and toffee notes. Tastes of coconut, toffee, and caramel. Really sweet. No carbonation. Pretty good burn on the back of the tongue. Glad I finally got to try this beer.

Bottle, shared. Pours a dark red-brown with no head, no lace, and a heavy, rich, syrupy consistency and appearance. Nose is port, fig, maple syrup -- really intense, really dark, and whiskey-like (shockingly). On the tongue, itís chocolate, maple, port, dark fruit, some hops bitterness; it doesnít manage to be over the top, but itís so intense as to be drinkable only in very small doses. I expected whiskey, but this is still recognizably beer; itís just beer distilled down to a thick, syrupy glaze. My brother-in-law thought it would make a killer ice cream topping, and I agree; I may also toss a shot of it into a pot of baked beans. (Heresy, I know.) More an experience than a beer, but Iím glad I had it.

2013 Edition bottle #12853. Small pour into the custom Utopias glass. Served at room temperature. Aroma: Instantly fills the room. Honey, toffee, vanilla, maple. When the glass is held closer to the nose, thereís just enough heat to give it a little tickle. Appearance: Clear, dark mahogany body. No visible carbonation at all. Slow, thick legs take forever to travel down the glass. Beautiful. Taste: Butterscotch, honey, maple, toffee, sherry, caramel, milk chocolate, Snickers. Cognac. Palate: Take a small sip, just enough to coat your tongue. Let it sit and slowly press upwards towards the palate. It feels like butterscotch candies melting on your tongue. Creamy, melty, ever so slightly syrupy. Plenty of alcohol heat, but itís a slow, mellow burn. Itís not a blazing fire, itís the cozy, warm coals. Overall: The most breathtaking beer I have ever had. A game-changer. A better cognac than Hennessy, and a better Oloroso sherry than most sherries. My favorite beer of all-time.
