COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Samuel Adams continues to expand their Small Batch Series in 2012. On the schedule is Verloren, and gose. There aren’t a lot of U.S. brewers making a gose, especially a brewery as large as Boston Beer. That’s probably why they dubbed it “Verloren” or “lost” beer . (It’s Dutch.) The style originated in Goselar, Germany in the 18th century. Gose became very popular the adjacent city of Leipzig, Germany due to a lot of local breweries brewing the style. Gose all but died out during WWII due to brewery closings. Expect this beer to have a touch of sourness, with notes of lemon & salt. A link to the ales of Saxony that had all but vanished, Gose is a peculiar yet captivating brew. With a base of an unfiltered wheat ale, it’s vivid and refreshing yet also has a softness to it. The flavor is brought to life by an unexpected touch of salt for a mineral quality, and coriander for a peppery spice. The result is an unusual and delicate brew that’s full of flavors to discover. Batch #1

(bottle - 22 oz) Hazy orange pour with a fizzy white head. Citrus and whet in the aroma with a hint of coriander. Flavor is the same light coriander spice overtop of a dry wheat note but the salt adds another dimension to it. Really balances well with the coriander and gives it an almost salted candy and bubblegum finish.

Transfer from BA review on 12-22-12- Poured from bomber into strange glass Appearance – The beer pours a hazy orange amber color with a nice two finger just off white head. The head has a moderate level of retention, with big soapy looking bubbles slowly popping over time to leave a good level of lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a floral and wheat aroma. The floral nature of the brew has strong scent of lavender and jasmine which melds quite well with the wheat as well as a odd and light salty “sea like” smell. Taste – The taste begins with a sweet orange citrus, peach, and wheat bread flavor. The wheat, peach and citrus remain a base for the beer with the peach and wheat actually getting slightly stronger in flavor as the taste moves on. In the middle of the taste a light spicy and peppery hop flavor come to the tongue. These flavors while present are still quite soft and meld with the soft wheat and citrus flavors well. Some light flowery notes come to the taste at the end, leaving a nice smooth and clean wheat flavor to be left on the tongue when it is all said and done. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the lighter to average side in terms of creaminess with a carbonation level that is average. The feel is quite nice for the softer and rather diverse flavors of the brew. Overall – This is one tasty brew. While I do not have much experience in the gose category and hence do not really have a great perception as of yet what the ideal one tastes like, I very much enjoyed this rather soft yet flavorful and quite drinkable beer. This is definitely one to try if you get a chance.

Draft to taster. Looks solid; a fairly transparent gold with foamy eggshell head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells yeasty with mild notes of lemon and salt. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. A little bland for the style, but not bad.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy gold body under a one finger frothy off-white head that left some heavy lacing. The nose is slightly briney with some pale malt sweetness. The flavor is not quite as intense on the saltiness as many of the other beers of this style that I’ve had. Slightly sweet up front with some bready malt and a slight citrusy note. Light to medium bodied with soft fizzy carbonation. Pretty interesting, but not quite as vibrant as most other efforts I’ve had.

So this is weird. Aromas of bread, salt, cardboard, some unidentifiable ingredients... Maybe coriander. Salty flavors, bready.. Some herbal notes. Not sure I can finish the whole bottle. Not bad.. Just weird.

Lemon and tartness on the nose. Citrus and a bit of wheat on the palate initially, finishing tart. Not much in the way of spice even though that is what the description says.

On tap at East Nashville Beer Festival 2014. Golden orange color. I believe the keg was being kept too cold which killed a lot of the flavor. The spiciness is nice and overall refreshing. The style is difficult and almost bland by design. Sam does a good job of respecting the style and making it just interesting enough.

Draft at Moriartys. Very hazy orange pour with a frothy off-white head. The saltiness jumped out at me before I knew to look for it. Lots of expected wheat beer notes but it is the odder ones that distinguish it. A lot of hard minerals. Some funky citrus happening here as well. Unusual, but cannot help thinking that someone poured a Margerita in my beer.
