Samuel Adams continues to expand their Small Batch Series in 2012. On the schedule is Verloren, and gose. There arenít a lot of U.S. brewers making a gose, especially a brewery as large as Boston Beer. Thatís probably why they dubbed it ďVerlorenĒ or ďlostĒ beer . (Itís Dutch.) The style originated in Goselar, Germany in the 18th century. Gose became very popular the adjacent city of Leipzig, Germany due to a lot of local breweries brewing the style. Gose all but died out during WWII due to brewery closings. Expect this beer to have a touch of sourness, with notes of lemon & salt. A link to the ales of Saxony that had all but vanished, Gose is a peculiar yet captivating brew. With a base of an unfiltered wheat ale, itís vivid and refreshing yet also has a softness to it. The flavor is brought to life by an unexpected touch of salt for a mineral quality, and coriander for a peppery spice. The result is an unusual and delicate brew thatís full of flavors to discover. Batch #1

Cloudy copper-amber with a small beige head that quickly recedes. Aroma of wheat, citrus, tropical fruit, and coriander. The taste is wheaty and fruity with a bit of spice and just a hint of salt. Light-medium bodied, refreshing, and smooth. Not bad, and nice for summer.

a nice wheat flavor with a hint of bitterness. Donít know the style at all. This is a nice summer beer.

Pours a slightly hazy medium amber color with a decent white head that leaves lots of stickage. Smells of spicy wheat and a pepper with hints of earth and salt. It kind of smells like a peppery macro wheat beer. the taste is sweet with honey like malts, a bit of a spicy peppery bite to mix things up a bit as well as a bit of mineral earthiness. Medium body with a spirited level of carbonation and a slick sweet mouthfeel. Kind of an easy drinking brew, a bit different. Itís only my second gose, but I think I liked the Bruery version a little better.

Hazy gold/orange color, creamy white head. Bready, yeasty aroma with maybe a hint of saline. Flavor is lightly salty, bready, yeasty, sugar cookie flavors. Tasty.

Pours a cloudy soft orange. Massive billowy head. Fruit, wheat and yeast in the nose. Taste is semi sweet with a hint of that coriander they talk about. The salt in the beer continues to build as a flavor profile, but does balance out. Yeasty and salty on the tongue on the way out. Interesting beer, need to try it with food.

Attractive label. This was definitely an American take on a classic style, but not bad for that (just not as aggressive perhaps). The notes that came out later, as it warmed, projected a floral quality, and it was an earthy, honest sort of beer. Light color, moderately ambitious flavors. Nice effort. Bottle.

1 June 2012, bottle. Yellow, clear, no bubbles. Nose is straw and dried malt. Thin body and slightly fizzy. Toasted malt and caramel. Meh. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

500 ml from Liquor Barn. Straw. Wheat. Yeasty. But not a Gose. Pretty disappointing since I had high expectations for Sam Adams doing a Gose. Not the best six bucks I ever spent.

16.9 oz bottle, batch 1. Poured into a flute. Half hazy pale yellow color. Thin white head. Some lace. Fruitier than I was expecting. Some tropical flavors, like mango, apricot, peach, strawberries, or watermelon in there. More dry texture. Lighter carbonation. Yeah, thereís a light salty taste, and thatís prominent. Not much sweet or bitterness, really. I shouldíve shared this with somebody, because... This isnít interesting or tasty enough to kill on my own. Yeah itís kind of salty, but Iím not sure what that adds here. Iím not sure what a "gose" is supposed to taste like, but if this is it, I canít call myself a fan (nice to learn about a new style, though). Had to toss the last bit out.
