Samuel Adams continues to expand their Small Batch Series in 2012. On the schedule is Verloren, and gose. There arenít a lot of U.S. brewers making a gose, especially a brewery as large as Boston Beer. Thatís probably why they dubbed it ďVerlorenĒ or ďlostĒ beer . (Itís Dutch.) The style originated in Goselar, Germany in the 18th century. Gose became very popular the adjacent city of Leipzig, Germany due to a lot of local breweries brewing the style. Gose all but died out during WWII due to brewery closings. Expect this beer to have a touch of sourness, with notes of lemon & salt. A link to the ales of Saxony that had all but vanished, Gose is a peculiar yet captivating brew. With a base of an unfiltered wheat ale, itís vivid and refreshing yet also has a softness to it. The flavor is brought to life by an unexpected touch of salt for a mineral quality, and coriander for a peppery spice. The result is an unusual and delicate brew thatís full of flavors to discover. Batch #1

Pailhead (5803) - Plymouth, Michigan, USA - JUN 7, 2012
Bottle: The aroma consists of wheat, bread, lemon grass, grass, and a touch of citrus. It pours a a slightly hazy dull burnt-orange with a three finger off-white head with good retention. The flavor starts some sweet caramel and lightly fruity flavors. There is some breadiness in the background. The finish some light grass, faint citrus, and a touch of pepper. I want to say thereís just the slightest hint of salt, but they may be the "power of suggestion" leading me to believe itís there. Itís light-medium bodied mild carbonation and a soft mouthfeel. Overall, itís an okay drinker, but I liked the Leipziger Gose better.

Bottle. Pours turbid orangy with a dark straw bottom and more orange toward the top. The head is 3-fingers of off-white beauty, and laces well. Nose is tart fruit, very floral and spicy, with spare malt. Tastes tart, fruity, with grainy malt and a wheaty finish. There is a bit of that semi-sweet cloying malt flavor in this that I have experienced in other SA beers. Not bad, but not something that makes me jump for joy.

Cloudy copper-amber with a small beige head that quickly recedes. Aroma of wheat, citrus, tropical fruit, and coriander. The taste is wheaty and fruity with a bit of spice and just a hint of salt. Light-medium bodied, refreshing, and smooth. Not bad, and nice for summer.

Pours a slightly hazy medium amber color with a decent white head that leaves lots of stickage. Smells of spicy wheat and a pepper with hints of earth and salt. It kind of smells like a peppery macro wheat beer. the taste is sweet with honey like malts, a bit of a spicy peppery bite to mix things up a bit as well as a bit of mineral earthiness. Medium body with a spirited level of carbonation and a slick sweet mouthfeel. Kind of an easy drinking brew, a bit different. Itís only my second gose, but I think I liked the Bruery version a little better.

ttoadee (1027) - Austin, Texas, USA - JUN 3, 2012
Pours a cloudy soft orange. Massive billowy head. Fruit, wheat and yeast in the nose. Taste is semi sweet with a hint of that coriander they talk about. The salt in the beer continues to build as a flavor profile, but does balance out. Yeasty and salty on the tongue on the way out. Interesting beer, need to try it with food.
