COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Samuel Adams continues to expand their Small Batch Series in 2012. On the schedule is Verloren, and gose. There aren’t a lot of U.S. brewers making a gose, especially a brewery as large as Boston Beer. That’s probably why they dubbed it “Verloren” or “lost” beer . (It’s Dutch.) The style originated in Goselar, Germany in the 18th century. Gose became very popular the adjacent city of Leipzig, Germany due to a lot of local breweries brewing the style. Gose all but died out during WWII due to brewery closings. Expect this beer to have a touch of sourness, with notes of lemon & salt. A link to the ales of Saxony that had all but vanished, Gose is a peculiar yet captivating brew. With a base of an unfiltered wheat ale, it’s vivid and refreshing yet also has a softness to it. The flavor is brought to life by an unexpected touch of salt for a mineral quality, and coriander for a peppery spice. The result is an unusual and delicate brew that’s full of flavors to discover. Wow, a saaz balance with a light salty mineral mouth feel. Smells of a wheat beer. It’s mineral balance of taste is unique. Worth a try for a bottle. Wished there were more to compare it to.

Smells sour and somewhat cheesy. Pours clear bronze with a thick white head. Flavor is like a good wheat beer with a long sour finish.

Bomber from Small Batch Sampler from Costco. Nose is slightly sweet with floral and corn notes along with some caramel. Clear gold with a medium white head. Flavor is lightly tart with light saltiness and a hint of sweetness.

A vigorous pour into my Teku glass produces a three finger thick, pale tan colored head that leaves quite a bit of lacing on the sides of my glass. The beer is a bright, rich amber hue that shows an orange-tinged, pale copper color when held up to the light. The aroma smells of oxidized caramelized malt, some citrus notes, a slight grassiness, and lots of sweet tea like crystal malt notes (and I am not even sure there is any crystal malt in this beer, there shouldn’t be).

The beer has an herbal taste to it, and this gets more so towards the finish; there is also a light citrus character here and a sort of bitter finish. There is a certain nuttiness to the malt character here, some caramelized sweetness, and a toasted whole grain character. There is a sort of grassy, sort of caramelized lemon like, sort of herbal, not quite menthol like character to this beer too. Fairly light bodied, but it does seem to have a bit too much body to it for a Gose.

I can’t imagine how this is a Gose really, really quite a flop, I am really just more confused than anything. Hey it looks pretty, but it doesn’t even manage to look like what a Gose should look like. Not bad, but quite far off the mark.

Bottle. Pours a semihazy copper with a white head of foam. Aroma is heavily spiced with coriander and then some biscuity malt comes through similar to graham crackers. Tastes spicy and sweet. I’m really missing some semblance of tartness. Maybe they didn’t intend for this beer to have any of that...

Bottle from Amity, New Haven. Pours a clear dark amber color with a large white head. Good head retention. Aroma of candied lemons, spice and mild salt. The taste is pure lemons balanced by mild brininess and significant bliss. Medium bodied and quite a pleasant surpise.

Draft danish pour. Golden pour with a slight white head. Lightly floral aroma. Taste is a bit floral and pepper, but really overpowered by the salt. They really wanted you to know this has salt in it. Could never drink a full glass of this.

The aroma is chiefly citrus while also being slightly acetic. Moderate sweetness is noted. Tangerine, lemon (???) with hints of biscuit. Pours a cloudy orange with a long lasting off-white head and minimal lacing. The taste is citrusy, with notes of salt and grain in the finish. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Overall, while the taste is subdued, I think this would be a good summer sipper.
