3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 ROGUE (1566) - Newark, Delaware, USA - DEC 27, 2008
12oz bottle. Poured a clear and deep amber color. A thin foamy head of tan foam. The aroma yields deep and rich molasses like notes with a sweet nut-like quality. The taste is full of fine weighty malts. Caramel comes through, along with woody and earthy notes. A nutty bitterness appears in the finish. Full flavored and overall a good beer.
2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 BlackDonald (1127) - Boise, Idaho, USA - APR 23, 2008
Notes from 2004 - Not the best thing to ever come down the pike at Sam Adams, but drinkable. A sweet caramel malt background, a bit of salty nuttiness, and some dried fruit glaze the palate, dry finish, but not overly complex. Did nothing to wow me.

Not too familiar with this style, was more remniscent of a strong amber. Poured an amber orange with some brown and a fluffly off-white head. Aroma was roasted malt, dry hops and hints of fruit. Taste was caramel, along with roasted nuts, grapes, prunes and spicy hops. After is well-balanced. Good drinking beer.

Pours a dark Amber, nice taste. Good malty flavor. It finishes a little weak for my taste but not a bad brew. A slight smokey taste can be found.

Pretty good. I used to love this but then I got more educated about beer. This beer is unique tasting and difficult to find at least as far as I know. If you’re not a big beer drinker you’ll probably dig this beer.

Not a bad offering, just not the best Jim Koch has to give. Nonetheless, it’s a mild beer that should entertain a few wannabe beer drinkers for a while. Heck, it entertained me for a little while.

Bottle: Deep amber color and a lasting eggshell head. Lots of malt along with earth, oak, toast. As others have mentioned, this has a similar taste to the winter lager. Not bad.
