While Jim Koch and company deserve the worldís respect for making craft beer commercially viable, they canít seem to come off the idea of mixing wheat and orange with cinnamon and other spices. Sounds good in theory, but the product tastes a bit fishy. It looks like witbier, but that is irrelevant. Sharp spices may work in a malt heavy porter or doppel, however a delicate wheat ale is another story. Tastes like a quahog with a nutmeg pearl inside. Hopefully this is the worst rating I will bestow upon our local pride and joy.

Pours a hazy, dark golden yellow color with lighter banana yellow hues and a one finger, frothy white head that quickly settles into a thin, lasting ring. Minimal spotty lacing left behind.
Zesty autumnal spice aroma with sweet citrus, malted wheat and a strong bread/yeast presence. Smells more like a fall beer than a winter/Christmas ale. Reminds me of a pumpkin wheat beer with lots of cinnamon, allspice and ginger followed by bread, banana, clove, cider and orange peel. Interesting approach to the style but not very inviting.
On the fuller end of medium body with a peppery spice presence that lingers over the yeast and sweet citrus notes into a slightly dry finish. Prominent zesty spice up front with clove, cinnamon, ginger, allspice and nutmeg followed by strong bread/yeast flavor, sweet citrus rind, banana, bubblegum, apple cider and subtle pumpkin. Tastes appropriate for the season but itís slightly watered down and the flavors donít mesh very well. Kind of bland except for being heavily spice and having strong wheat/bread flavor. Even the spice blend feels a bit generic and the orange peel is buried underneath the other notes. Okay for this time if year but not something that I would want to drink more than once.

Weak attempt at a Christmas spice beer . Shabby and boring . I could drink all 12 and I would worry about calories. That's all.

Found at Famous Wines in August, notched "Best By April." Spicy nose of the usual holiday/pumpkin pie beer. Cloudy gold color under a foamy head. Taste has mostly, yes, cinnamon and nutmeg, like the usual pie spice beer. Malt is starting to pick up some phenol. Attempts to create a holiday Wassail character, but again, it seems more like just another pumpkin pie spice beer. At least itís not too sweet. Most beers Iíve let sit just a few months past their date hold up better than this.

Tan head on the pour that mostly diminishes, pale yellow body, fizzy, lots of carbonation and glass lacing. Aroma of wheat, citrus, oranges, hint of spices. Flavor is similar to the aroma, just a bit spicier. Thin and watery on the finish.

2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Appearance: cloudy orangey gold with one finger of bright white head shrinking to a creamy cap, with generous lace curtains. Aroma: typical witbier aroma, but with the clear addition of cinnamon, nutmeg, and candied fruit. Taste: candied citrus and pineapple, toasted coriander, vanilla custard, cinnamon, hint of mulled wine. Finish: lingering creamy sweetness, big winter spices. Notes: Ugh. Wanted to like this, because I think their Cold Snap wit with plums is actually good. The "winter" spices and flavors were just too strong, and they warred unpleasantly with the witbier base, which could no longer be refreshing. Bottle from Village Beer & Fine Wine, Rockville.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Rated on 10-31-2013 (Bottle from Krogerís Marketplace-Fort Wayne, IN) This beer pours a huge smooth off-white head that mostly diminishes, hazy pale yellow body, fizzy, fast rising carbonation, and a good amount of lacing adorns my glass. The aroma is wheat, malt, orange peel, citrus, sweet, and a suggestion of spice. The flavor is sweet, wheat, malt, orange peel, and lightly spicy. The mouthfeel is watery and thin and this beer is light-medium bodied. This is a very watery and thin tasting beer. It has very little character and is bland tasting.
