COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sam Adams Whitewater IPA. A wheat ale brewed with apricots & spices.
This hazy brew combines the crisp character of a white ale with the intense pine and citrus flavors of an India Pale Ale. We took the unique combination to a new level with the sublet addition of apricots, which provide a slight sweetness to balance the bitterness of the hops. Cheers!

A Wheat IPA flavored with Apricots and Spices. Yuck - My expectations were that this would be a cloying mess. I may have over-rated this beer because my expectations were so low. Actually it has a nice hoppy aroma when opened, and luckily the hops outshine everything else - the apricots are well in the background where they should be - actually, they should not be anywhere in sight, but experimentation is good, right? Just like cloves in cigarettes, I guess. The apricots and spices are unnecessary, but not overpowering, so I will reluctantly tolerate their presence. A "nice to try once" beer - maybe I can pawn the rest off on my unsuspecting friends when they come to visit. The trouble is, the hopheads will object to the apricots and spices, and the folks that like all of those fruity beers will object to the hops. Truly a beer no one will want to be friends with.

12 oz pour from bottle into Spiegelau IPA glass. Pours dull find, moderate soapy white head. Body is medium, a little sticky. Nose is piney, resin. Taste is bitter, not too complex, resin. Not exactly what I think of when I consider white IPAs.

Pours a clear yellow color with a nice small white head. Nose of orange peel, citrus, some spricot also. Light body. Sweet taste with a small bitter finish.

Straight from the bottle, June 2014 so this isnít fair. Malt bomb cuz itís so past its date. Malt predominates with some citrus. Both in nose and flavor. Malty, caramel, mild orange and lemon. Ehh. Iím sure fresh itíd be half decent. But take this one with a grain of salt. Not sure how itís even on the shelves this old.

Draft. Semi-clear yellow with one finger white head leaving thick lacing. Aroma is citrusy with lemon, light orange and wheat. Taste is similar with zestier lemon and more subdued wheat and orange. Smooth medium mouthfeel, light to medium carbonation and soft lemony aftertaste.

Pretty basic tasting IPA. Had some wheaty aspects and wit spices. Down the middle.

Basic IPA. Nothing special or of note. Opaque coloring was the best quality.

Second beer consumed out of the summer variety pack in a bottle. I just had the Got to Gose debacle. Got to Goseís Gotís to Go. This one is certainly better. The appearance is a hazy gold with a generic white foamy head. The smell is sweet on the nose. The citrus is certainly there. The hybrid of a Belgian style wheat with the piny hops and citrus of an IPA is actually a pretty decent marriage. They say thereís apricot and orange peel in there, and Iím getting that. Itís refreshing, balanced. Not bad Sam, redeeming after that Got to Gose

Pale, hazy yellow with dense white foam. Faint hops and apricot / citrus nose, maybe some wheaty bread. The initial sweet flavor gives way to the hoppiness. I like the idea of a wheat / IPA hybrid, but I am not sure this one stands out enough.

2015 BJCP Category: 21B Specialty IPA: White IPA

AROMA: Orange and apricot peel is strong. Slight perfume or soapy smell. Spices and esters override hops. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Pale orange/yellow. Extremely hazy. Small, dense, white foam. 2/3

FLAVOR: Overall palette is similar to Blue Moon: witbier-ish but faux. Dry bitterness throughout with slight orangepeel flavor. Apricot presence is invisible. Strong black pepper sensation on finish. Seems to have a dirty taste and maybe even some unintentional sourness. Offputting. 6/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body and well carbonated. Palette is extremely astringent with lingering unpleasant aftertaste. Not refreshing at all. 2/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Difficult to believe this is the intended taste; seems like a bad batch. Flavors do not harmonize. Canít finish it. 4/10

TOTAL SCORE: 22/50
