COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bold and rich, with a touch of holiday spice. The first thing one notices about a Samuel Adams® Winter Lager is the deep ruby color. Then comes the magical aroma which promises something special on the tongue. The cinnamon, ginger, and hint of citrus from the orange peel blend with the roasty sweetness of the malts to deliver a warming, spicy flavor. On the palate Samuel Adams Winter Lager is rich and full bodied, robust and warming, a wonderful way to enjoy the cold evenings that come with the season.

Rating #35 for 2012 Aroma of dark fruits, syrup, and malt. A brandy like deep amber almost brown color. Taste of malt light holiday spice. Light carbonation. Not a bad macro brew. Will re-rate

Pours a dark amber color with no head at all. Aroma of sweet Caramel malts and spices, cinnamon and a slight note of nutmeg are present. The taste is a bit too sweet, not much of a hop bitterness to balance. It’s fairly easy to drink but there is nothing special here. Not something I would ever seek out.

from notes: amber with a white head. seems like a bock beer to me upon first taste. not really spicy, not really a spice/herb/vegetable beer. Just a decent, solid lager from Sammy. Average.

I’m going by notes written in January, this was part of a SA’s winter pack. Poured amber color, small tan head. Notes of caramel and some spices. The spices come out on tasting, like cinnamon and orange. Not the best holiday beer but one I can enjoy if available.

Smells a little caramel like. Some roast barley type malt. Bit of a bitter tang. some spice, almost nutmeg or something, maybe a little cinnamon. Nothing too exciting here. Bottle.

Crystal clear medium amber with a light tan head. Malty aromas with hints of dried dark fruit that follow into the flavor. Nice chewy body with a dark breadiness with some light baking spice flavor and a caramel and light molasses sweetness. There’s a light earthy bitterness and a dryness throughout. Finishes dry on the tongue with a lingering woodiness. Nice, relatively light wintertime beer.

Originally reviewed: 1/8/09. Had this on tap at the First Street Draught House here in town. Came out a tawny amber-ish color with a nice inch and a half head that retained well. Great lacing rings along the glass edge. Smells of roasted caramel, and some spices. Nice and crisp beer, but smooth also. Easy drinker. Tastes of aforementioned roasted caramel, and high malt. Light bitterness on this one. Very good winter brew. Recommend.

Pours a dark amber color with a small white head. Aroma is sweet and spicy. Taste of citrus, cinnamon and orange peel with a spicy finish. Ok beer.

Brief write up. Much like the Old Fezziwig Ale, this is a fine drinker, but doesn’t stand out much at all. The spice note (which I’m usually not a fan of) doesn’t interfere with the base beer, and is easy drinking on a cool night.

UPDATED: APR 30, 2012 Poured a dark brown with 2 fingers of off white head. Smell of caramel and nuts. Tastes kind of like cinnamon, rough on the palate. Not my favorite Sam Adams brew.
