3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: DEC 11, 2003 Release 2003
The color as it comes fresh from the bottle a pellucid burnished copper with a mastodonic head that is frothy in texture and the color light tan with a thick sealing sheet of lace. Nose is sweet malt, fresh and pleasing to the senses with the start lightly sweet and decently malted, top is fair to middling in feel. Finish is modestly carbonated, the hops relatively unobtrusive in their spiciness, quite dry aftertaste, another of those benign beers that are just plain good to drink when you’re not in the mood for a “Bad Boy” beer. I’ve always found Samuel Adams beers to be quite drinkable and always a good session beer.

this is a very unique beer. it has a great mouthfeel. there is a sweetness followed by a nice hoppy finish. this might sound weird but it gave me a warm feeling after i drank two or three. good beer for a cold fall/winter night

(Best by 3/03) When I look at this beer, I think to myself that this beer is one very classy looking glass of beer, all the right stuff. However, once I taste it I am brought back down to earth. The nose is sweet and spicy with a touch of malt and the palate is a bit rough, over spiced and pasteurized. The finish nauseates me; I do not think that I could finish an entire pint, too sweet and spicy. What’s with a bottom fermented weizenbock anyways?

UPDATED: NOV 9, 2011 Rerate Still solid - just not so generous with my ratings 9 years to the date later! Original 3.9 Excellent! Warm, inviting, malty aroma. Thick, long lasting, cream off-white head with lasting lace. Nice, deep dark copper color. Sweet flavor, leaning towards a belgian ale, but a bit more subtle. Glad I bought a whole six of this rather than just one to sample. Sammy comes through again!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
For a mass produced beer, This is one of the best I’ve had. Nice amber/brown color with a small yet lasting head. Aroma of sweet malt and a hint of banana. Flavor is malty and sweet like that of a bock yet finishes smooth and clean. This is a wonderfully easy to drink, and enjoyable beer.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A great-looking beer with a nice rocky head. The flavor and aroma are a little disappointing, however. The best I can say is "smooth" with respect to the flavor. Not unlike Wild Goose Winter Goose, but not lacks the aromatic qualities of the latter. I rather miss their old Winter Lager recipe (c. 1992), which was more of a bock.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Had this beer on draft, and was actually disappointed. I did not like it as much as other winter seasonals. Too malty. Even more so then the German varieties I have had.
