icculus801 (24), New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Oct 30, 2008 Sweet aroma with hints of banana and clove. Pours a translucent brown with a pronounced off white head that thins out quickly with nice lacing. Taste is sweet and malty, but I don’t notice a lot of spice. Feels syrupy on the tongue and gives way to a fairly clean finish. A good offering from Sam Adams, but it doesn’t approach the best from this category, e.g. Aventinus. LilBeerDoctor (1480), East Setauket, New York, USA Oct 29, 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep amber/brown with a thick, fluffy off-white head. Aroma of sweet wheaty malt and faint cinnamon. Flavor of sweet malt with a slight vegetal quality and some buttered popcorn (seems to be a common flavor among Sam Adams beers...). Nice and tasty. Sam Adams knows how to make their lagers! basewars (144), Albany, New York, USA Oct 28, 2008 Bottle. Pours amber with a white head. Aroma is cinnamon but weak. Flavor is malty with a little hop bitterness. Good beer, but not a great example of the style. thechandler (268), Morgantown, West Virginia, USA Oct 27, 2008 Bottle. Aroma...slightly sweet, a bit of citrus. Slight spiciness, but not a whole lot. Flavor is a little roasty. Nice and warm, with a citrus afterthought. Slight spice notes. Clove, allspice, and a dash of cinnamon, I think. Overall, Very solid. jimmack34 (560), Lancaster, Ohio, USA Oct 27, 2008 Bottle. Pours deep red/brown color with a medium head that lasts a couple minutes. Smells of rich maltsand very faint roasty aroma. Tastes nutty, carmelly, roasty, sweet with a slight hint of some seasoning. Good beer overall. Miamifan1354 (19), , Delaware, USA Oct 26, 2008 Bottle into pint glass. Pours a dark brown, yet clear with a think head. Smells of spices and sugar. Tastes like caramel. Would be great with a piece of apple pie. HonkeyBra (1274), Lemont, Illinois, USA Oct 26, 2008 Pours a dark clear brown with a thick white head. Aroma of caramel and spices: cinnamon, clove, some wheat, etc and so forth. Flavor has a bunch of spice with burnt caramel sugar. Finishes kind of spicey with some hop. My favorite Sam Adams seasonal by a landslide. mctous (119), Herndon, Virginia, USA Oct 24, 2008 The nutmeg really blends well with the wheat aroma without overwhelming it. Sam’s Winter Lager pours with just-right carbonation and plenty of lacing and head retention. The flavor is very clean with subdued wheat and noble hop flavors. The spice lingers in the finish, detracting somewhat from the palate. The mouthfeel is just right. Overall a well-brewed weizenbock which just lacks the complexity and depth of its German counterparts.
