phishpond417 (1861), Madison, Wisconsin, USA May 12, 2008 Nice beer overall- pours a rich copper colour, with a small to medium sized tan head thats gone before you know it. moderately sweet and bready A tummy warmer with lots to offer, dark fruit- particularly cherries and apples. ThaBobfather (178), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA May 11, 2008 I very quality lager for the warming of the cheeks. I drank it for most of December and just finished my last bottle. It is a bit spicy like many winter beers with some other layers of a good flavor. BeerFanDan17 (610), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA May 10, 2008 We had this in the bottle last Labor Day and I forgot to rate it. A darker lager, almost like a hefeweizen. Flavors are rich are warming and slightly spicy. elcaballo (101), Beverly Hills, California, USA May 9, 2008 Overly sweet with too little spice to it. Flavor has some vanilla in it as well as some carmel. Nothing special at all and not really my style MrBeerFanatic (345), jamestown, New York, USA May 9, 2008 Nothing really stands out in this bock. Just a normal weizen bock. Not bad overall. soulgrowl (52), Kitakyushu-shi, Japan May 7, 2008 Aroma: Caramel malts, diacetyl, apple jelly, sugar, and citric hops.
Appearance: Bold, brick red-orange with just barely off-white head; compliments the Christmas tree well.
Flavor: A smooth caramel malt base balanced with woody/resiny hops. The bottle claims that this beer has been brewed with "winter spices," but I honestly cannot taste them at all, except perhaps for an EXTREMELY understated nutmeg character. Tangy yeast adds an interesting edge, but otherwise this is more or less just an average red lager.
Palate: Smooth and clean; flavorful without being aggressive or overpowering. I think this will go well with my Christmas dinner.
Overall: Very drinkable, but I long for something with a bit more presence. PlunkersDuo (6), USA does not count May 5, 2008 Not what we expected by the name winter lager, then again we’re from Texas and don’t understand the true meaning of winter. Though we did agree it would be good with a turkey dinner. This is defiantly not a "distance beer" (meaning drink 10 of these) but it would be quite good with a meal. It is a pretty hearty Sam Adams beer with some spices added to the mix, especially in the after taste.
As far as buying it again, unlikely for us due to it is hard to find around here but if it was we would consider it for a beer to match up with food. Defiantly worth a try if you can find it. ontheroad (25), Buffalo, New York, USA May 2, 2008 Pours with a faor hear and medium-brown color. Has an aroma of malt and orange. Flavor matcher the scent with an added hint of spice.
