Odyn (205), New York, USA Feb 16, 2008 Not a bad brew, I like the color and it’s flavor isn’t too heavy like so many other winter styles. The berry sweetness that is so strong in others is mild. Not an all day drinker, but good for a couple at the ski lodge! Chantdaddy (19), New Jersey, USA Feb 15, 2008 ...this is NOT a weizenbock. Any beer than uses the name "weizen" must use one of the approved "wheat" yeasts (i.e. hefeweizen, weinstephan, et al.), which this beer does not... it uses a house lager yeast. This brew is, in no way, representative of a weizenbock. For an actual weizenbock try things like Harpoon’s weizenbock, or Plank dunkler weizenbock... or any tradional German beer of the style.
That said, it’s not a bad beer, it’s probably the best beer I’ve tasted from Sam Adam’s. The only spice that is apparent to me is ginger. All in all, this beer is really more reminiscent of an Oktoberfest... If you like this brew, do yourself a favor and get a 6 pack of a traditonal German Oktoberfest, or even a good American representation of one, like Brooklyn’s Oktoberfest... it’s better money spent in my opinion. spikester (602), Salem, Oregon, USA Feb 15, 2008 A nice dark beer. A bit too sweet for my tastes, some hops evident but too few for regular consumption. A well crafted beer. Sam Adams is not well represented in Oregon. Have only found 3 types here. guyinchicago (516), marengo, Illinois, USA Feb 14, 2008 Updated: Oct 26, 2008another great style of beer from sams, very light hints of ciinnamon and ginger in this smooth brownish, warm the soul winter lager one of my favorites fro sams jetboy (32), USA Feb 8, 2008 As usual Boston Beer provides a good solid mass offering. I love their beers because they are available everywhere, so there is always a good beer available. Although this doesn’t hit them out of the park like many, this is a strong entry to the market. Good amber color with a malty spicy aroma. The aroma tells you exactly what to expect taste wise malty spicy with a slight hop finish. Good stuff, better than other things coming out of New England (Go Giants).
GG (1613), NorCal, California, USA Feb 8, 2008 Another solid offering from Samuel Adams, this time a beer from their Holiday Box. I’ve not seen this beer for sale in sixers, but each time I get that Holiday Pack this is in there. I’m suprised I haven’t rated it yet, so here it goes.
The beer pours out a light amber color, clear with a nice off-white two finger head. Aroma is spicy malts, slightly fruity and a touch flowery. Flavor is suprisingly fruity, but spicy at the same time. Lots of undefined spices in this one. Sweetness levels are kept in check, which keeps it well balanced. Nothing complex but the beer is satisfying. ChetLemmons (87), orlando, Florida, USA Feb 7, 2008 07, weizen glass. dark, hazy amber color. 2 finger thick white head, slowly faded. all i get from the nose is malt, hints of caramel, very slight. light bodied. malt and spice taste, with an aftertaste i can’t quite put my finger on...copper/wheat? not a bad seasonal, but i much prefer straight out of the bottle. WesKBob (317), Bethany, Oklahoma, USA Feb 5, 2008 Pours a nice amber color. A thick head that dissipates quickly. Distinct, but not strong, aroma of hops and spice. My memory could be mistaken, but this one seems to have stronger spice flavors than in previous years. Heavily carbonated and not a lot of bite. Not bad as seasonals go, but not something I’d drink on a regular basis.
