Origin: Tap. Vessel: Nonic. Supplier: King William Ale House (Bristol). Roasted nose. Deep black with foamy head. Barley taste gives way to smokiness. Thick body. As rich sd you’d like a stout to be.

Keg tap at the Maypole, Cambridge. Extremely black with a perfect tight cream-coloured head. Slight liquorice aroma with hints of coffee bean. I can taste the spicy liquorice, but only just. Balanced bitter aftertaste. Medium body. I’m sure this is good but it’s hard to get too much of a sense of it. All the personality seems to have been lost in the temperature (too cold) and the forced carbonation.

Keg at Sinclair’s Oyster Bar, Manchester. A deep brown to black colour with a creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, some coffee and smoke. Taste of roasted malt, milk chocolate, coffee, some dried fruit and dry nuttiness. Light bodied and smooth texture. A dry, roasted finish. Very similar to Guinness but has its brewed in England, and Manchester in particular, you get the proper homegrown taste like Guinness tastes in Ireland.

Keg at Glasshouse Stores, Soho. It pours jet black with a thick, dense light tan head. The nose is toasty, earthy roast, coffee grounds, mild smoke and cocoa. The taste is bitter, roast, peppery, charred wood, ash, mild acidity and a touch of cocoa with a dry, roasty finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Very solid dry stout.
