Keg tap at the Maypole, Cambridge. Extremely black with a perfect tight cream-coloured head. Slight liquorice aroma with hints of coffee bean. I can taste the spicy liquorice, but only just. Balanced bitter aftertaste. Medium body. Iím sure this is good but itís hard to get too much of a sense of it. All the personality seems to have been lost in the temperature (too cold) and the forced carbonation.

Keg at Sinclairís Oyster Bar, Manchester. A deep brown to black colour with a creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, some coffee and smoke. Taste of roasted malt, milk chocolate, coffee, some dried fruit and dry nuttiness. Light bodied and smooth texture. A dry, roasted finish. Very similar to Guinness but has its brewed in England, and Manchester in particular, you get the proper homegrown taste like Guinness tastes in Ireland.

The taste is bitter, roast, peppery, charred wood, ash, mild acidity and a touch of cocoa with a dry, roasty finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Very solid dry stout.
