Smooth and rich, with a steady and thick chocolate-looking head. No extreme flavors immediately, although I find the balance of sweetness and tart, dry malts very refreshing. A little thiner and less intense than others I've had in the style, but this doesn't necessarily detract.

1/19/03: bottle. good amount of bubbly head when poured. brown- black color. sweet, heavy malt smell. light, watery malt taste. i would like to try one of sam smith’s on tap to find out if their beers taste better that way (…maybe they just don’t travel well!)

Beautiful black stout with dark brown lacing but no real head. Nose of sweet malt, hops, and cocoa. Taste of sweet malt, hops, cocoa, bitter espresso, with a bitter hop finish to counter the sweetness. Mouth feel is a bit thin for an imperial stout; not surprising, since at 7% ABV this is more a session beer than an imperial. With American IPAs coming in at close to 10% and imperial stouts coming in at over 15%, this is sort of a session imperial!

: plums or apricots. Roasted taste, almost too sweet. Finish is grainy and full.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: AUG 22, 2004 Pours opaquely with a creamy tan head that coats the glass. Aroma of sweet plums, mildly roasted malt and some soy. Silky, rich, malty palate hides the alcohol magnificently and finishes a great roasted chocolate. Has a touch of sour toffee from age I'm guessing, but otherwise a nice, very drinkable example of the style.

Excellent Imperial. Dark dark brown in color. Nice creamy beige head that slowly disapated before my first swig. Malty/Roasty aroma that has some slight chocolate/alcohol notes. Smooth roasty start with a nice full/silky palate. Nice hop bitterness finished the beer. Alcohol well hidden.
