Very dark with tan coloured head and a rich aroma of coffee and muted chocolate. Flavour is sweet with some molasses and palate as oily as would be expected. Not as strong as most imperial stouts but but this fact makes it a tad more drinkable than the real heavies.

UPDATED: JUL 28, 2015 Black opaque color with creamy brown head. Visualy low carbonation. Aroma without notice of an alcohol, but with notes of dried fruits; raisins, with hints coffee and smoked. Flavor: alcohol note is mild noticable. Prevails Fruity sweet notes (esters of plums, pears), with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, roasted barley and hint of smoked. Finish is more alcoholic, sweet/ dry in obvious more bitter. Malt sweetness is high, hop bittereness is medium, body is soft / stick, finish is long lasting. Proper imperial stout and absolutely complex for so low abv.

bottle at home. black color, coffee colored head. smells heavy dried fruits, raisins, coffee, light roasted but also light smoky smell, some sweet malts, quite interesting and nice combination. full body, oily texture, obvious but soft carbonation, tastes light smoky, malty, some light sweetness, but more roasted character, some coffee, chocolate, dried fruits, raisins again, plums, light alcoholic, overall a bit sweet, feels a bit heavy for 7 ABV (compared to other beers). light roasty / quite dry / fruity bitter finish. I had high hopes for this, and am a tad bit underwhelmed now. Its quite heavy and complex for a beer of 7 ABV, but I am having a hard time finishing a bottle of this. Overall still quite good though.

Bottle: Black pour with deep brown edges; fluffy, deep-khaki head forms & slowly settles to a thick film. Aroma of roasted malts, laden with a rich, chocolate undertone. Chocolate bar. Hints of nuts, some residual brown sugars. Maybe some anise. Smells a bit underattenuated. Flavor is more black licorice heavy, but still has plentiful bittersweet cocoa, roast, & toasted nuts. A touch of brown sugar & caramel in the finish. Maybe some smoke? Overall, it seems like there’s a bunch going on, but it’s rather mild & timid for the style. A tad thin, too. Not bad, but not great, either.

550 ml bottle bought at Gorgeous Wine & Cigar in Yuen Long.

Looks: Deep blackish brown colour; Three finger head with crumpety lasting dark beige foam which lasted for 4 minutes. Excellent sticky lacing with very small carbonation.

Aroma: Rich, very fragrant and sweet roasted malt, with strong cookies, fruitcakes, thick dark bread, dark chocolate, alcohol, sugar, plums, strong raisins, strong caramel, toffee, heavy cream, faint soy sauce, light milk coffee and fairly light grass. Wow!

Taste: Close to medium sweet, strongly-roasted dark malt, with strong metallic, strong roasted coffee beans, strong dark chocolate, toffee, caramel, strong raisins, strong dark bread, very light soy sauce, strong molasses, yeast, moderate lime, fairly strong bitter hops and grass.

Body: Full body; Thick and smooth palate.

Mouth Feel: It’s intense liquid dark bread all the way – very strong roasted dark malt in a thick body. Initial strong metallic is quickly blanketed by thick, flour-dusted dark bread. I swear I never tasted dark bread so strong in a beer so this is it! Nuts is surprisingly low. Sweetness and booze is well hidden you simply don’t notice most of the time. Another bright spot is its dark chocolate, very loud and clear and I love it! Soya sauce is relatively timid. Limey hops tops it all. Very satisfying!

Hoppiness: Light grass in nose, strong lime and lemon in taste. Bitterness is moderate to high for a lasting, medium bitter sweet finish.

After taste: Fairly dry. Very roasty, dark-bready and quite rich to mouth.

Comments: Don’t think this one will impress due to its rather low booze level, but man this is impressive in its own way - headline grabbing dark bread and chocolate aroma and taste, beautiful and lasting beige head and retention, comfortable booze and sweetness, and matching hoppiness. Who say an Imperial Stout has to be more than 10% to be great? This is a very well balanced Stout, and if you enjoy dark bread like I do, this is a perfect choice as a liquid meal. Excellent!

Klasyczny, stylowy imperial stout.

6.9.2014. Thick brown head. On the lighter side for IS, coffee, dryish, some chocolate. Good but somehow not perfectly balanced.

Pours nearly opaque deep brown with amber-brown highlights, three fingers of pillowy tan head, good retention and lacing. (4/5) Nose is roasty malt coffee and chocolate, red berries, vanilla and citrus. (7/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter, mild sour. (7/10) Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, sticky texture and lingering bitter finish. (4/5) Surprisingly light in both body and ABV for a RIS. Really quite similar to their Oatmeal. Though, the higher ABV and more syrupy texture does a better job of disguising what I’ve concluded must be a high metal content in the Tadcaster water. Ultimately, though, I’ve had better Russians. (15/20)
