2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20

Pours almost pitch black with a large brown head that settles within 5 min. Aromas of milk chocolate, mocha coffee & cream(?). Taste is unsweetened milk coffee, charred meat, marmite & cocoa powder. Mouthfeel is great - very creamy and full-bodied. Overall, pretty good but would be good to have some roasted malt sweetness somewhere in there to balance out all the bitterness.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
2nd Beer of 2014: 355ml Bottle, BBD Aug 2014, poured into a Palm badged tulip on 1st Jan.
Black with a deep, tanned head.
Coffee nose with dark chocolate notes and a mildly over roasted over smell.
The taste mirrors the aromas but more bitter than the sweetness I half expected from the esters coming out of the glass.
Smooth mouthfeel, the alcohol is hidden very well by the flavours and overall itís a great beer with few equals in itís style.

Black as night yet smooth as water, Samuel Smithís Imperial Stout has a strong coffee taste and a subtle hint of chocolate. Itís a full-bodied Imperial Stout but it still manages to be quite approachable given that it isnít excessively bitter. This English brewery has always known how to make a good dark beer. The Imperial Stout is yet another fine example.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark color with little to no head. I actually expected a better beer for its ratings. Not to bad, not to great. The oatmeal stout has a much better flavor.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
From 12oz bottle.
Pours dark with thin light brown head that quickly dissipated. Mild malt/choc aroma. Taste is consistent - mild, almost weak. Not bad, just not robust in any sense of the word.

350ml bottle at home. Black with a full beige head which didnít last long. Medium body with light to medium carbonation. Medium sweetness with some bitter notes. Smooth creamy and warming mouthfeel. Chocolate, grains, burned roast and some caramel. A great complex full flavoured imperial stout.

A spectacular brew that remains a benchmark decades after its introduction. Probably something Iíll be re-rating (on the upside) in the future.

Bottle at 28 Springs. Pours black with a lingering tan head. Aroma is slight chocolate and some roasted malts. A bit thin in the mouth. Slight tinny taste though not yore sour. Finishes very dry and slight roasty bitterness. Drinkable
