They say it’s complexity is due to malt, hops, alcohol, and yeast, but in reality, the only standout flavors I’m getting are of yeast. The aroma is incredibly estery -- dried fruits, burned fruits, clove, banana, etc. There’s some alcohol to it, too, but the roasted malt, which ought to be the backbone of this style, completely takes a backseat to the yeast. Flavor is the same thing. Fruit fruit fruit. Overall unimpressive, especially for the name the brewery has built for itself. Maybe I’m just continually failing to luck out and getting batches that have gone bad in transit, but I’ve consistently had trouble with SS beers. Not noteworthy.

Bottle. Very dark brown - almost black, average to large and mostly diminishing light brown head. Moderate to full, malty and sweetish aroma, light roasted malt and coffee/chocolate, faint licorice and hoppyness. Body is medium to full, malty and sweetish flavor, light caramel and faint roasted malt, light coffee. Finish is average, malty and, lightly sweetish - sweetish, light caramel and roasted malt, light coffee and faint licorice, light hoppyness. Bit too sweet for my taste. Could also use more body and bitterness.

Bottle fron the York Beer and Wine Shop. Pours black with a tan head. Quite a meaty aroma. Notes of chocolate and roast flavour. Just a hint of coffee. A little sharp perhaps. Quite rich, but not as luxurious as the best imperial stouts.

Dark color, creamy white head. Smells of bitter chocolate, molasses and alcohol preserved cherries (ciliegie sotto spirito). Rich complex taste of chocolate, lightly smoked toasted malts, dark fruits and some alcohol. Some coffee pops out in the dessert-like finish. Excellent.

Bottle from blacker Hall farm. This is a perfect stout Imo. Deep, dark, almost opaque black with a handsome head. Aroma of blackcurrants, treacle, and rich olive oil. Similar taste but not as treacley as you might expect, still rich but remains refreshing and tasty.

12 oz bottle. The beer pours to a medium black color with a thin off white head. The aroma has a strong dark fruit & licorice with some roasted malts in it. The taste was a little on the sweet side for my taste & overall was just pretty good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Botella 33cl.

(Bottle): Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of super-heavily roasted malt, dark chocolate and coffee. Taste is a lot more chocolatey than I expected, very smooth with a coffee, liquorice, malt and charred aftertaste. I didn’t know what to expect really but it was delicious.
