Bottle as pictured. $3.99. Enjoyed while watching game 2 of the Hawks/Canucks series w pops. [A] Smells of licorice, chocolate, cofee. Definitely a nicer quaff while warm. But pretty good, nonetheless. [A] Brown liquid sitting black in glass. Beautiful brown head with great retentiion. Beer becomes a little more translucent toward bottom of glass. [F] Chocolate, coffee, licorice. Some roast. Pretty basic for style. [P] Well drinkable. Mouth is somewhat chalky. Otherwise, thin. No significant hop bite. [O] Well rounded stout. I won’t complain for the price. It actually does have a great depth for an affordable beer. Let alone an import. As i am usually not so fond.

AROMA: bread, hay, roasty APPEARANCE: dark brown to black; rocky, tan head TASTE: light sweetness; heavy bitterness; medium sourness; hints of umami PALATE: full body; thick, sticky texture; soft to average carbonation; bitter finish OVERALL: Not bad at all; in my limited experience, I’ve found I’m a fan of Samuel Smith’s in general, and this one’s no exception. I would’ve liked a bit less hoppiness and a bit more malt, personally, but still a very solid stout.

Bottle from Willow’s Market in Menlo Park, CA. Aroma is wet chocolate, come cherries, sweet malts. Taste is smooth and tangy sweetness, mildly fudgy with some sweet liqueur. A bit of smoke and bitterness in there. Very drinkable.

bartholos (136) - GERMANY - JAN 15, 2016
Bottle. Opaque black colored with a nice creamy brown head. Great aroma composition of fruity and roasted notes. Dark fruits and plum are in the nose, with a nice sherry note along with dark chocolate, light coffee notes and some toast. Already rich and complex. Bitter dry taste with a light balancing sweetness in the beginning and a light sour note. Thick body with low carbonation and a smooth creamy mouthfeel. The roasted notes are getting stronger in the mouth, so there is more coffee, dark chocolate and toast while the dark fruits stay back. Some caramel and toffee come with the light sweetness. Great composition, very distinctive notes but put together in a very harmonic profile. With the bitter dry finish comes alcoholic warmth and a light peppery note. Leaves a light roasted bitter aftertaste. Great beer.

Bottle. Very dark with tan head. Smells like those European cookies that are just plain plus some jamminess and toastiness. Slick but not too heavy.

From the bottled poured a midnight black brew with plenty of thick brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasty malt, and a hint of chocolate. Roasted, sweet malt flavor with hint of vanilla and a hoppy follow up. Very good example of a imperial stout.
