550ml bottle from Mitchell’s Wines, Meadowhead - Light translucent golden copper coloured body, with a pillowy white head. Aroma is light fruits, weak caramel, and citrusy hops. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. Flavour is very grainy with some hop bitterness. Was in the throes of rating it as a ropey IPA, then realised halfway through it was an ESB! Changed my mindset quite a bit.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
By no means is this an IPA by American standards. It is in fact a weak interpetation of the style in general.
Pours with a nice copper color with a decent white head that fades. Good carbo’s.
Slight malt and hop aroma is present.
Buttery or butterscotch malt taste, earthy hops and maybe a hint of lemongrass.
A dry finish with a smooth body.

Pours ceylon tea coor with a persistent head. Earthy, damp basement english hops such as Fuggles and East Kent Goldings on the nose. Caramel coca-cola on the palate. Overall, balanced well and true-to-style if you like English India ales.

4.9 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
A shining example of the IPA style. Great mouthfeel, fantastic aroma, lovely palate, exquisite balance, absolutely the best hopping you’ll find in any beer, I can’t think of a better IPA, really. Should be obligatory study material for any aspiring brewer. And of course, the idiosyncratic labelling of the Smith brews is always a pleasure to behold.

Bottle@home. Copper clear. Small head. Low carbonation. More bread than hoppy notes. Dry long mouthfeel. Short bitter finish. Difficult to the difference til an ordinary ale.
