Poured into a pint glass from bottle. An off-white head reminiscent of a sink full of dish soap caps off this ale. Finishes with decent lacing but will quickly disappear as beer warms. A beautiful rich sunset yellow and earthy amber color accents the body of one of Smiths finest. A cloying sticky sweet scent follows a the scent of a straw field. The trademark smell of malts and hops acing in tandem. Taste ends with a (surprising) kick of alcohol, starts with a well carbinated hop blast which is quickly subdued by warm velvety roasted malt. A second round of hops gives us a nicely complex ale which really seperates this from the pack. Something I could drink a 2-3 times a month. Well done.

Floral hop aroma with malt hint. Clear rich ruby colour with a touch of gold and a thick beautiful head. Caramel malt profile with coffee and hints of toffee. Smooth slightly bitter hop finish and nutty hints. Medium to heavy body with medium carbonation.

Bottle, gift from Andrew. Golden amber body with a thin white head. Low carbonation. Light lacing. Aroma of honey and weak tea. Flavour of sweet caramel and tea. Thin body with a watery, slightly oily texture. Soft fizz. Dull but drinkable.

Pours a nice reddish sap like colour with a light white head which fades. Not much aroma maybe honey. Quite a sweet malty kick. Alright but nothing special.

550ml bottle from Mitchell’s Wines, Meadowhead - Light translucent golden copper coloured body, with a pillowy white head. Aroma is light fruits, weak caramel, and citrusy hops. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. Flavour is very grainy with some hop bitterness. Was in the throes of rating it as a ropey IPA, then realised halfway through it was an ESB! Changed my mindset quite a bit.

By no means is this an IPA by American standards. It is in fact a weak interpetation of the style in general. Pours with a nice copper color with a decent white head that fades. Good carbo’s. Slight malt and hop aroma is present. Buttery or butterscotch malt taste, earthy hops and maybe a hint of lemongrass. A dry finish with a smooth body.
