| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 17, 2009 550 ml Bottle from Henry’s Market. Pours a chestnut brown color with a generous lacy beige head. The aroma is fairly light with sweet roasted malts, brown sugar and caramel. The flavor is rich with caramel, nuts, biter hops and toffee. The mouthfeel is just a touch thinner than I prefer, but it does build to a pasty-sticky-malty conclusion. The finish was long with lingering biter-sweet notes. Overall: A very respectable brown. I was kind of surprised to see that I had not rated this before as Ive probably had it a hundred or so times over the years. I consider it to be the middle standard by which to judge brown ales. When I drink this style I always ask myself is it better or worse that S Smiths nut brown. Consider this required drinking. berkshirejohn (1797), Bracknell, Berkshire, England

Not as sweet tastes, very very nutty almost smoky maltiness with a big lasting grassy hoppy finish. bw1982 (73), , Florida, USA

Very smooth as typical of the brown ales, but also has some porter and even slight stout like notes. It’s a very solid beer for a nut brown ale, and the sweetness does fade on the aftertaste. There are nice flavors of malt and of course some nuttiness with maybe a hint of chocolate. Very easy drinking.
