fidelis83 (707), Clinton, Iowa, USA Dec 3, 2008 Pours dark, burnt orange with a tall chunky beige head, good retention, spots of lacing. Aroma of hazelnut, buttered toast, date nut bread, herbal hops. Flavor is a lot roastier, and hoppy than the nose would suggest, I probably should be drinking this a little warmer. Nutty malt and subtle herbal hops give way to roast, caramel, malted milk, and bitter hops in the middle. The finish Is indeed long and clean as the description states, a hint of roast malt covered in sticky toffee fade quickly and leave you with a nice bitter hop
note. Body is medium thick, and a little sticky, carbonation is spot on.
Dacrza (245), Great Meadows, New Jersey, USA Nov 30, 2008 I’d like to thank Uncle Muck for the timely drop-off of this beer when he visited last week--a pleasant surprise and a classy choice... browns seldom look impressive out of the bottle--that said, Samuel Smith’s NBA pours an opaque reddish-brown body with zero head (!?)... stands a solid, almost black-and-tan balance in THE Samuel Smith 12 oz. Nonick glass...warm, subtle notes of hazel nut and hops... 31 IBUs seems undertstated... balanced with a hint of sweetness... medium-bodied, with a solid presence massaging the tongue... mellow and drinkable... on par with the better in the genre... nuts! or at least a malty basis that enables the other characteristics--butter nut, molasses (!), burnt toffee--to soften and please.... tops Newcastle (sorry, brother Gil) slightly, and the few other studs in the style with a slightly stoutish lean... espenra (277), Oslo, Norway Nov 29, 2008 35,5cl bottle from Vinmonopolet. It poured a dark orange colour with a big creamy head that settled down fast in the glass leaving a thin roof. The aroma smells of almond nuts, caramel and roasted malts. The flavour is bitter-sweet and tastes of caramels, roasted malts and almonds. It has a medium long aftertaste. epf33 (222), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Nov 29, 2008 tingly/spicy finish, dark brown/red color, cinnamon and nutty flavor, very clean finish, i don’t know what makes me say this, but i think Santa Clause would love this beer a lot! LisaR (46), Gothenburg, Sweden Nov 21, 2008 Bottle. Brown-red colour with a beige head. Aroma: nuts, caramel, figs, roasted. Flavor: Rosted and nutty with notes of caramel, bread, hop bitterness, butter and christmas.
Jonte (801), Gothenburg, Sweden Nov 21, 2008 Bottle. Brown colour with a beige head. Aroma: Lightly roasted, nuts, caramel, figs, and a bit of hops. Flavor: Rosted and nutty with notes of caramel, bread, hop bitterness, butter. Dry finish. Quality Brown Ale. tarheels86 (703), Washington DC, USA Nov 20, 2008 Pours a clear amber with little carbonation and slight lacing. Aroma is Worcestershire sauce, rye bread, roasted malt, almonds. Watery to mildly creamy on the palate. Taste is a little thin with some roasted nuts.
Sour aftertaste but not unpleasant. Overall lackluster. penguinjive7 (67), Buffalo, New York, USA Nov 20, 2008 Pours a nice dark mahogany with about two fingers of foamy head.
Smell is mostly nutty with a very present malt aroma.
Taste is very nutty, especially as it warms. Malt is most present with a bit of hops showing up in the finish.
Nice medium bodied mouthfeel with the carbonation done just right.
I could drink this brew for any occasion and want more after finishing each one. This is a very well balanced brew which, if just wanted to sit around and have a beer, is the one I would choose.
