I’m generally bored silly with nut brown ales, and am hoping this one can break the trend. Pours a clear medium brown with little head. Weak aroma of nothing much. Flavour starts out with a medium maltiness that quickly gives way to a quite nice tang that lingers throughout the aftertaste. Medium bodied. That tangy finish keeps me coming back. A nut brown ale I like!

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 12, 2008 Appearance is a clear, dark amber-to-brown hue, thin layer of condensed white foam sustains, no lacing. Smell is caramel malts, almonds/walnuts, touch of brown sugar, butter popcorn, roast/toast malts, hint of hops. Taste is mostly roasty malts with a strong nutty backbone, caramel and toffee enter midway, finishes with a dry sweetness chock full of nuts. Palate is light-medium bodied, thin and watery texture, moderate carbonation. Overall, a very smooth and flavorful english brown with no discernible alcohol presence, right in the session range at 5%, could drink quite a bit of this one. rampmaster (319), Alden, New York, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Aug 11, 2008 Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz. bottle into a pint glass. It builds a thick and foamy head with a creamy tan color over a dark reddish brown body. The body has good clarity and some visible carbonation. The head has very good retention, lasting until the last sip, and it leaves light tan lacing on the glass. The aroma has a strong malty character with notes of mixed nuts and mild hops. It has a malty, sweet bread character that’s doughy and nutty. The presence of hops is mild and only noticeable towards the finish. Its carbonation is mild and the body is about medium making the texture smooth and creamy. This is a very enjoyable brown ale.

A nice nutty and hoppy flavor. Definitely complex. Caramelly texture. The more Samuel Smith beers I try the more I like them. DarkBeer (47), Ohio, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 6, 2008 Very nutty aroma. Pours amber-brown. Head laces nicely. Feels good in the mouth, with more body than some brown ales. The taste is complicated, and muty, of course. Nice clean finish, with a lovely aftertaste that llingers a while. eaglecoug (4), , Washington, USA does not count | 0.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 1/10 | 1/5 | 1/10 | 1/5 | 1/20 | Aug 4, 2008 Where do I start, the first aroma to hit my nose was a soy sauce smell. That did it for me, where I drained the bottle and went-on to the next beer. Ober (1186), Bommelerwaard, Netherlands

Usually I agree with what I read and hear from people at this website. But for some reason this one just didn’t sit smoothly with me. Very thick and nutty flavor. It almost reminded me of Sam’s Triple Black. (which is nothing short of horrible). I usually like this type of flavor and style. Maybe it was skunked ( there is no expiration date on it) and that explains such a pungent taste. I’m going to go with that excuse!
