n49921 (108), USA Feb 21, 2008 Bottle. Has a nice nut aroma, with a bit of malt. Color is almost a deep amber, and has a slight head. Taste starts nutty and turns dry. Overall, just a very solid nut brown. iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA Feb 19, 2008 355mL bottle, no date. Clear reddish brown with a one finger beige head. Aroma up front is hazelnuts, minerals (hard water notes), sweet caramel and biscuity malts. Flavor is much the same with a light toast component added. There is some sweetness, but it doesn’t really come through until just before the swallow. There was also a cola flavor in there at some point. Semi-dry finish with a light earthy bitterness that peaked at a 2 (out of 10). Light to medium body with light to moderate carbonation. Not necessarily complex, but pretty tasty for what it is. I dunno how I took so long to rate this. RedSox2004 (353), Pacific Palisades, California, USA Feb 18, 2008 Reddish brown with about a half inch of thick tan head that held throughout. Hazelnut and caramel were present in a very pleasant aroma. Perfectly balanced taste with sweet butterscotch that precedes a finish of dry nuttiness. An underlying buttery flavor compliments the smoothness of the beer. Medium bodied, nice carbonation. A terrific beer - seems like I always go for the SS Oatmeal Stout when both are available, but I was richly rewarded with my choice this time. blklab2007 (943), Connecticut, USA Feb 18, 2008 bottle poured an amber in color with a thin head of tan foam and lighter carbination. aroma is lighter with plumb, dark fruit, caramel malt, and some bitters. mouth feel is light but pleasant with a fruity thickness. flavor has plenty of dark fruits, enough malt and sweetness to give nice body and a dry bitter on the sides of the tongue. definitely got better as it warmed a bit and a good drinking beer just seems held back in the flavor department. afireinside96 (817), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 12, 2008 pours dark ruby with one finger of tan head. smells heavenly with notes of raisins, plums, caramel, & brown sugar. taste is malt sugar and nuts. finishes short and sweet. only flaw really is the texture. feels thin and watery. still very good and highly sessionable. Ethereal (1500), London, Greater London, England Feb 11, 2008 Bottle at the John Snow, Soho, 4th Feb 2008. Pours a good chestnut colour with a persistent head. Aroma of sweet malt, plums and dried fruit. Similar flavour, a fruity brown ale with a little bit of bitterness. Decent mouthfeel but a short finish. Average. Jblauvs (531), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Feb 9, 2008 Brown pour, already aromatic, off white head
Sweet, nutty aromas, scents of fresh dates.
