One of my favs, a classic brown that doesn’t try to strech the aroma boundaries. A average head with cloudy body that busts out the nutty earth that is brown sugar meeting up with an oak tree.

Pours a deep dark brown with a slightly sweet aroma. Thick but quickly dissipating head. Taste is absolutely nutty. Without a doubt the most nutty beer Ive ever had. Almost to a fault but not quite. Aside from that, its very sweet and mellow, and malty. But, without a doubt, nutty. Overall, very good if you like full flavored, nutty dark brown ales

Bottle: Poured a reddish brown with short brown head. The aroma was a sweet nuts and tingly hops. The taste is dry nutty malt.

Quickly dissapating head that leaves thin lacing. Clear brown, carbonated body. Smells of honey and nuts. There is a kind of branyish taste, which is a little sweet. There are definately a bunch of malts in the taste along with the obvious taste of nuts. It leaves a noticable aftertaste, but that’s ok. One of the weirder brown ales I’ve had.

Pours a deep reddish-brown with a creamy fluffy head. Tons of lacing on left on the side of my glass. The aroma is malty but not super sweet with some chest nut or walnuts. The beer itself is absolutely delicious. The malt is the primary taste but I envision some nuts there as well. Smooth long lasting finish that feels great on the tongue.

Maaaan, this is my favorite beer of all time. I’m telling you, I don’t understand why other beers don’t want to be this good. Though I’ve had better and worse batches of this (maybe due to the clear glass bottle?), the first time I ever had it was just unbeatable. Look at that head! It’s what I consider perfect. It almost looks like food. Such texture. And the taste is just perfect. There’s a slight sweetness but not so much that you’d call it sweet, and I guess that’s part of the perfect malt-ness of it, which just gives it a perfect depth. Mix that with the color and the perfect mouthfeel and we have ourselves a winner. I would drink his brother John’s ale in my local in Scotland and was pissed when I actually went to York and couldn’t find Samuel’s on tap anywhere. Yarrrgh! I mean, it’s from there! or at least Yorkshire anyway. You’d think they’d have it on tap, but no, just John (this was ’96-97). So I’ve only ever had it in the bottle. But it’s still the best. I don’t even like brown ale otherwise. Newcastle, for example, tastes just about like brown water to me. I don’t understand why there’s no flavor in most of the browns I’ve tried. They really have no right to that color if they aren’t going to deliver flavor. It’s bait and switch I tell you. This one is nothing like other watery brown ales I’ve tried. Love me some SSNBA.

Big yellowish beige head. Deep dark reddish brown body with ongoing carbonation. Syrupy sharpish alcoholic caramel and nuts aroma with notes of dried fruits and toffee. Clean, harmonic, and balanaced. Deep sharpish sweet and dry taste of alcoholic fruity chocolate with roasty notes. Dryish nutty aftertaste, slightly metallic. Nutty metallic taste with a sharpish edge lingers for quite a while. An excellent beer, both for sipping and as a session beer. (0.355l bottle ordered from the Wine Monopoly.)

The only brown ale I’ll drink. Very nice nut taste. Decent body. This and the oatmeal stout are the best products of Samuel Smith.
