Chestnut coloured beer, large and lasting off-white head. Moderate aroma of hazelnuts, malts, caramel and chocolate. Malty flavour, moderately sweet with plenty of caramel, nutty finish with moderate hops. Nice enough, definitely better than Newcastle "Broon", but not really outstanding. mgermani (864), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Sep 26, 2007 Pours a deep mahogany brown with a brief but pleasant head and lasting lace. Very faint peanut-butter aroma, slightly sweet. Sweet malt with subtle anglo-hops and a nearly-warm nutty finish. Tastes a bit dusty. Good creamy body with excellent carbonation. What I found most remarkable about this beer is that it tastes very familiar - just like all the other Samuel Smith beers I’ve had. Must be the yeast, or perhaps a signature hopping schedule? I have had better brown ales, but I have no complaints. Average. goldbrew (99), USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Sep 21, 2007 Poured from bottle to dimpled mug. Rich flavor, not the best of its class. It’s an acceptable drink but I won’t make a special reach for it. Odd crooked mouthfeel. Flavors separated and worsened as beer warmed however. Coffee flavor a bit strong and astringent. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 18, 2007 Updated: Dec 15, 2007I have been drinking this since about 1995 & it was among the earliest beers I had. In its a deep red brown, with a big, thick, long-lasting tan head that leaves some lacing. This is a good, nutty ale with richer flavour and sharponess than the old stand-by, Newcastle, but a little less approachable or easy to drink. The body and flavour are fairly rich, complex, with a faint wine quality on top of the nut, malt, and caramel, along with a faint sweet-sour element and definite but mild walnut bitterness. tarjei (1745), Bryne, Norway

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 9, 2007 Bottle. Pours a light brown with a good strong head. The taste is hazelnut and a smooth malt. The aftertaste is mostly bitter hops with a coffe/nutty taste. Good. BigMilly8 (374), Holiday, Florida, USA

Smells of Malts, nuts and hints of butterscotch. It isnt thin and isnt thick in your mouth, its a nice median, and feels lively on the palate. A nutty and toffee taste with malts. Good Brown Ale.
